Hi Guys I have a cagiva mito 125 1991 and having trouble starting. I have stripped carb cleaned and soaked in fuel with all jets ect out and not blocked. I have also drained the tank and put new petrol in. I have had the bike running and seemed to ride well but as I came to stop revs died down and engine cut out. The bike now is very difficult to start, had it started but not ticking over well. With the choke open was ticking over then revs started to to rise but soon as I turned the choke off bike died out. Now cant seem to get in to start.

I have got a K&N cone type filter on the bike. Its not a k&n just a standard one on. I bought a standard air box housing off ebay but end is to big to fit on carb. I believe this filter in causing problems but not sure. I am trying to get the bike ticking over so i can adjust the carb setting to be running right but bike is a bugger to start any suggestions guys.

Regrads
Gareth

Hi Gareth,

I'm a fairly new biker so can't really tell you exactly what it is, but since it's Friday night you may have to wait until tomorrow for a more experienced rider to help you out. But, since i'm stuck in work I'll tell you where I would start if you want to start early tomorrow or something.

First, when you drained the tank did you clean it out, and clean the fuel filter too?

Second, have your connected the vacuum hose properly?

Thirdly, see if it will start with your fuel tap in prime position.

I'd be looking for a problem with a fuel supply rather than air if I was you.

I may be wrong, but that's what I'd be checking first.

Good luck too.

Also,

since your stripping carbs your probably more experienced than myself, and already knew to check my suggestions, but sometimes things get overlooked.

Thanks for the post. I have never thought of trying to run it with it set to prime. Only thing with setting it to prime I believe fuel will keep flowing to the carb. I was not sure what pri was until this afternoon. Thought it was fuel off or something but had fuel leak under bike. But now you mention it will see if it starts with it set to pri and if it dose it must be a fueling problem. Also I had cleaned the fuel filter.

An carbs are not hard at alll to strip, its fine tuning and getting them set right and working that,s a bit tricky.

Thanks
Gareth

I got myself a 97 Suzuki GSX600 katana.

It's been 4 months of problem after problem, a fast learning curve of bike maintainence and repairing, an expensive discovery that the local bike mechanic is a con artist, a further 2 months putting it right afterwards. . . . . But,

(Just as winter starts to reveal it's ugly mush),

It runs like a dream now Very Happy

(Big thanks to guys on here, everything I've done to get my bike spot on has been from asking the guys on here).

You can pretty much ignore the above.

It doesn't have a vacuum hose to the tank.
It doesn't have a ''prime'' setting on the tank

The cone filter is probably the cause of the problem, and I would suggest firstly replacing the sparkplug as your mixture has probably fucked it.

Secondly, on the airbox end of the carb, there should be a plastic cap that spaces it out to fit the airbox boot, sounds like this is missing.

Unless it's not a standard carb.

hi,
i've owned umpteen mk1/2 mitos & know a wee bit about them.
if the airbox trumpet is not fitting the carb correctly, then you may have wrong trumpet/airbox/carb set up!
they made 2 types, very small differences in size/dimensions BIG difference in fit & performance..
1 was for the dellorto 28mm carb, the other was for the for the far superior mikuni tmx 35mm carb.
i'd suggest starting again.
take the carb off & let me know what jets are fitted & i'll compare with what SHOULD be fitted.
also look at the airbox trumpet & tell me the part number, it might help if we find out its the right one.
lastly, & most importantly, what carb is on it?
remember ALL these bikes were sold full power (as imports) but plenty clowns have fitted smaller jets, disconnected pv's etc in an effort to make them learner legal,
as for filters, stick to the oem airbox (again, couple of different types) with a cheap filter element, i personally dont rate the thicker dual density type.
cheers,
GAZ
