Hi all im dave 29 from Durham

after few bad years i have start work on my bike. my dad got me this bike a few year ago as a project to do together so i could learn about mechanics and give me sum thing to do to help with my depression. just after getting it unfortunately we found out he had lung cancer. so past few year it just been sat he pass away just before xmas this year and had to help my mum sell house and find sum where to live and i move with my partner to Sheffield.

but now things are settling down i have started work on it with help of haynes manual. im not taking it back to original as i plan to keep it a very long time as it got a lot of sentimental value to me. so going to costume it to how i like witch will be mate black with a few steam punk touches.

im going to keep a log of my progress of my work on hear so you can see how im doing and when i need it i can ask for help

right now i have strip every thing off the frame and sorting out my big pile of spear parts to find out what i can keep and what i need new.

Dave

Hi Dave
good little project you have there.
the frame....
pick up some wire brush wheels and attatch them to a drill, something like these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-PCE-ROTARY-WIRE-BRUSH-SET-METAL-CLEANING-CLEANSING-DRILL-SET-RUST-REMOVER-/170847733940?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item27c75188b4

also takes time but easier than sandpaper i think.
PAINT? i had also recently considered powder coating but went with aerosol paint, i used this stuff

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-500-ML-SIMONIZ-TOUGH-GLOSS-BLACK-SPRAY-PAINT-/250858142472?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item3a684f7b08

you MIGHT get away with just the one tin but its horrible to run out and have to leave it while you get more so 2 is best.

also if possible try to make sure your engine is all good before sticking it in the frame as its very annoying ruining your nice new paint taking it out again!

i stuck my engine on an old dinner trolley and bolted it in Laughing
its a nice working height and will be good for painting the motor in when its ready.

a 2012 CBR600RR would have been a better choice for getting over depression to be honest.

I like the CB125 twins.

One question though.. The early ones were more powerful than the later ones due to learner laws. Does that mean that the later ones are de-tuned or simply restricted?

De-Tuned.

The Twin-Shock CB125T's had a claimed 17bhp. However in 1980, Honda went to town on the design of the CB125 'Super-Dream' expecting it to sell, significantly in Britain, as well as the former learner Legal CB250 Super-Dream, that accounted for about half of all 250 UK registrations.... they were dissapointed... 125 sales after 125 learner laws hardly increased over the few 125's they sold before!

However, we got a completely 'new' machine, that boasted a powerful twin-piston front t brake, over the twin-shocks cable operated russian-roulette-rotor, sophisticated mono-shock rear suspension, full regulated, battery damped 12v electrics with beefy generator for a 125 to give some belt and braces dependability to the e-start only engine.

DIFFERENCES?

Lots. It was completely re-engineered. The motor in the Super-Dream shares the major mechanicals of the earlier T-Shock bike, BUT.

Generator; went from 6v AC direct lighting and points ignition, to a 12v, all regulated, inductor trigger CDI ignition system.

Generator casing, and stator back plate was revised to house the new generator and the E-start mechanism. Crank-cases were revised to accomodate lugs to mount the starter motor. The primary drive casing was revised, to loose the kick-start mechanism.

Internally; not sure about the gear-ratios, though both have five speed gear-boxes. Most is the same I believe. Though head castings have different part numbers, though valves are the same part number, so likely that they are the same casting, and difference is a detail revision such as the finish, early motors being silver, later ones black,

Main components that were changed during de-tuning to UK 12.5bhp learner limit; Cam-Shaft, got significantly softer profile; the inlet manifolds are shorter, a different shape, and smaller internal diameter, and the carburettors are a different variant of Keihin, and 24mm instead of 26.

Next question, can you use T-Spec parts to 'de-restrict' a Super-Dream?

Answer is yes and no.

Cam drops straight in, IF you can find one. They are rare as rocking horse poop.

Carburettors? Well, the 26mm carbs used on the T would fit Super-Dream rubbers, but be restricted by the smaller manifolds.

Choke mechanism, on the T-Shock is also on the left hand carb and rod-linked between the two. The Super-Dream's cable choke wouldnt work, but more annoying, the shorter and angled 'in' manifolds would mean that the rigid choke link would not allow the carbs to be fitted without removing the linkage. So carburettors would have to be hybridised.

IF you decided to use T-Shock inlet manifolds? Well they point the carbs 'out' from the engine, unlike the Super-Dreams that point them 'in'.

Using them, then would put the carbs further back in teh cradle, and put the carb-mouths up against teh frame rails..... you would have some major clerance issues, and wouldn't easily be able to use the stock air-boxes or proprietry stub filters.

There WAS a 'Full-Power' variant of teh Super-Dream made for some markets that had the hotter cam, wider inlet manifolds and larger, later generation carbs. I think a couple found thier way to Ireland, and some more to Italy and Belgium. But BOG OFF rare, bits even rarer.

Its NOT an easy task to tackle, and hinges on getting hold of that Cam-Shaft, and there aren't many around.

Hehe I spent along time on my 1980 CB125T... The engine parts have all done less than 20k... and its got a new official Honda top end.

Sadly its looking shabby... Fantastic bikes... Abit gutless at times but very fun to ride.
