Good evening!

I've been itching to get my HGV license for a while now. Maybe not as a career, but for something inbetween jobs (going to be a while before what I want to do recruits).

I passed my car test in 2007 and I'm 23.

License categories have always confused me, so need a bit of help.

If I want to be able to drive Articulated Lorries (C+E), would I need to do my Rigid Lorry (C) test as well? Or can I do C+E before I've done C?

I'm going to give a few places a ring after the weekend, but thought I would ask on here, know there are a couple of HGV drivers on here.

Thanks.

You have to do C (Ridged) before you do C+E (articulated)

I tried to get my HGV, too. I couldn't afford it so I opted for a Counterbalance and Reach truck forklift license.

Make sure you get a medical done, too. I had to do one, then send that off to DVLA so I could get my C and C+E entitlement.

As above, C first, then C+E. Didn't used to be the case, for has been for a while.

Also, it's kind of an expensive thing to do just for 'occasional use'. You may find it difficult to find work at your age, as an occasional driver with no experience.

Not trying to put you off, but just something to think about. A lot of people do it for a stop gap, and actually find it better work or perhaps better paid than what they were intending to do originally. Hence how HGV driving often traps people.

Plenty of work for rigid lorry drivers though, as well as articulated, so although having a C+E obviously widens your options, don't think that you 'have' to have it to get work. Personally for me, purely from a driving perspective I find the physical act of driving something bendy far more involving than driving a rigid, but in terms of the actual work involved, both have their positives and negatives.

What is it you actually want to do, out of curiosity?

What sort of cost are we talking about these days?

It's been a few years since I did it, but maybe £1200-1500 per category?

As well as requiring to take your CPC training with the practical bit initially and then X amount of training hours (35?) over the next 5 years.

If you are employed, I expect your employers will put you through it. If you are agency then I expect you'll have to pay for it yourself.

Yup, it's a pisser, especially as like most nonsense courses of this type, they aren't going to teach you anything new/useful or that you don't already know better than the guy teaching it.

It's just a rubber stamp job, and a complete waste of time, and my money of course.
