So , I was just thinking I have a 5mm wetsuit hung up in the cupboard , could this be used as a thermal base layer , would it even work ?

I've never worn it unless I've been windsurfing so don't know how they act in the dry ?

All you can do is try it mate. So far I'm using a thermal polyester base layer, and jeans on top, and then fit my leathers. But on top half thermal top, and a thin jumper, then a hoody, then leather jacket.

Seems okay down to about 7-8 deg.... Still a bit nippy though.

Might be a bit too warm. Wet suits are fairly good at keeping you warm in cold water where heat is drawn away from your body something like 20times faster than in air. If you're only using it in air, you'll find you'll be absolutely baking within no time (although given the amount of rain we've been having lately, you might be onto something).

On top of that, they're not the most flexible of items, so you might find it a bit tiring riding around in a wetsuit.

There's only one way to find out for sure though. Let us know how it works out for you.

On the basis that you can get neoprene kidney belts it's not too weird an idea.

However, I suspect as mentioned flexibility may be an issue and not sure how it would handle coming off. Thinking having a slide here. Also not sure how practical and comfortable it would be when reaching your destination (getting out of it, storage, etc.)

I went to the final day of school in my wet suit under my clothes and ran around in it.

It's warm... sometimes too warm and you will sweat like a bitch, and that sweat will stay there and just make you soak in your own smell. It's truly nasty. Plus it can be a tight because the arms and legs are designed to be tight. They don't fold down well and they take forever to dry out....
