AskMid.com is saying my bike isn't on the database, my policy starts today. Is this normal?

TBH I don't know, but why not just ring up your insurers and ask them to make sure it's put on.

Officially (as in if you ask any insurer), it can take several days for the MID to be updated by them for a new policy/reg number.

Practically, it is usually updated within a day or so.

When I recently changed my insurance to my new bike, it took one day, insurance was starting on 16th, but the MID was updated on the 17th. If you have a certificate showing the date your insurance is valid from, it's a good idea to keep it with you until the MID is updated.

Did you buy online? You might have an e-certificate; in which you will never be posted a hard copy of your certificate but you can access it online.

I've never had a physical insurance certificate, only e-ones.

Go to their nearest branch and ask them to print the certificate for you, this is what I had to do when mine wasn't showing up. Put it in a waterproof bag and put that in a pocket.

If you don't have a certificate of insurance in your possession (or available electronically) then by the letter of the law, you are not yet insured in a way that satisfies the Road Traffic Act.

That's pretty much a technicality now, but not being on the MID makes it a significant issue. That's asking for a tug.

"Midnight tonight" is a funny term. You reckon your policy started at the beginning of the 26th? Any chance that some cloth eared Bangalorian thought you meant from the 27th?

Are you absolutely sure that you are insured? How would you go about proving it? There's no "Well, I thought I was" defence, that's at best mitigation.

Check MID every day. If you are not showing on it e mail insurance company. Then ring them and complain by phone. Rinse and repeat 'til you are showing as insured on it.

If the insurance industry and rozzers are going to place so much faith in the magic of the database. The insurers and rozzers need to ensure the database is accurate and updated daily.

To spend a week or more being stopped by traffic plod who have had their brains replaced by the MID because some slap dash insurance company have not had your details updated is piss poor.

Called my insurers up and they said I am insured and if I get pulled up then the police can call them to confirm.

assuming the copper that pulls you can be bothered. make sure you got a mobile phone with credit so YOU can call them and hand the phone to the police just in case.

That is ok I guess. If you don't mind the risk of being stopped and inconvenienced every other day. My brother was stopped 3 times in a week by the same copper when his car wasn't on MID, he was insured. You then also run the small risk of the insurance chimp on the other end of the phone telling the rozzers you are not insured, when you are.

Is there someone at your insurance company 24/7 to answer calls from the rozzers when they screw up and don't add your details to MID in a timely manner?

Should be fine then, as long as the story doesn't change when you're grabbed by the fuzz.

They're actually lying though. Since you haven't got a certificate of insurance, you're not insured in a way that satisfies the RTA. You won't find a copper that cares, mind, but it's a pretty poor show from insurers, especially when they get their knickers in a twist about returning or destroying certificates.

If they pull you in the evening then your screwed.... as most customer service lines are only open between 9am - 6pm. They will then take your bike and you will have to pay £100+ to get it back.
