The bike is a 1984 VT250F... With various parts dating around that time Smile... I think they were made from 82 - 86?

This story starts off as all good stories should... I was in the pub, with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. He had bought a VT250 years ago as a project but he had moved in with his parents and then realised he'd bitten off much more than he could chew with the bike. He had got it all together but he couldnt get more than the oil light to come on.

He then told me he had been given an ultimatum that he needed to fix the bike or get rid because it was taking up way too much space... He had decided to scrap it and was going to pay someone to come and pick it up.

On hearing this I stepped up and offered him what he was going to pay to scrap it to come and take it away.. He gratefully accepted.

After a trailer and pickup full of bike parts (2 1/2 bikes here) (3 Frames)

The first plan was getting the engine running... with a quick play about the compression felt fantastic and the engine appeared to not be leaking anywhere... From what I knew these bikes had issues with carb leaks.

First we looked at the hydralic clutch which was completely gummed up.. as was the front brake... After freeing we decided to hit the easy electrics.

After tracing most of the wiring we decided there was an earth fault somewhere. We set about checking earths!

After running various earths to places all over the bike... We finally had a working power system, all the ignition lights came on and you had power through the switchs... Yet the bike still wouldnt start.

We discover that the bike has a clutch sensor that will only allow the bike to turn over when the clutch is in... This sensor to this day is "iffy". So after having it all to pieces and running some new earths in... We ended up with the clutch tied up and just messing about... Eventually though it turned over! After chucking the tank back on again and throwing abit of petrol through the carbs it coughed into life.

The exhausts were blowing insanely but it would just about rev and the engine made no knocks or bangs... so all was looking up.

After attempting to tune up the carbs we decided it was time to be brave and pull them apart, On doing this we found A. VT250s have the most complicated airbox to take off... and B. The carbs were full of sh*t and looked like they hadnt been touched in 15 years.

Not the best picture!

Currently I am riding the bike to and from work happily and its very fun..

I plan to repaint and polish up certain parts and also look at changing/rebuilding the suspension on the bike!

I think that my VT250 was the most fun bike I ever owned. Not the fastest, nor the best handling, but definately the most fun.

Thanks for posting.

It has no issue keeping up with bigger bikes, I think it would handle very well but the suspension is flawed. I'm looking to change it about it Smile

Had a vt250 in those exact colours as my first bike. Bought it needing a bit of tlc for £40 then used it for work everyday over the winter. Except for a fuel switch diaphragm giving up on the m25 it was bulletproof.
