I have chain/disc lock but obviously these can be cut. Are alarmed disc locks the best option considering I will be within earshot of the park when it is parked in places in which I am worried about theft?

Standard alarms seem v expensive and can leave you stranded.

Another option I thought about was hiding a cheap GPS tracker on the bike like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Spy-Vehicle-Real-Time-Tracker-For-GSM-GPRS-GPS-System-Tracking-Device-TK102-/270992943447?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3f18702957

If it got nicked and I got a GPS position on it, would the police follow it up and tell me to get fucked?

Problem with all those devices is they don't stop someone lifting the bike into a van. Best bet is an Almax chain and lock which as far as I know has never been defeated.

depends how much you have to play with, if its under £50, unless you buy used, you're best bet is a big fuck off yellow disk lock and the fattest chain you can find, more of a detterent than actually stopping somebody. If you have a bit more then start looking at more expensive (Almax) Just chain it through the frame if you can, as theres been many a rider come back to just a chained up wheel!

A - Get 5 years insurance quotes with a claim for a stolen bike declared each year for 5 years. B - Get 5 years quotes with NCB intact, subtract B from A then add your compulsory / voluntary excess to that amount. How much does it add up to?

Get a proper chain from Almax or Pragmasis, lock it through the frame where possible. Lock the other end to something immovable.

^^ This

Why do you have to buy the cheapest?

Get something decent FFS - at least make it an deterrent for them.

where possible use the oxford ground anchor and a good chain, i also have an oxford disc lock alarm which is supposedly 10 minute attack tested. as already mentioned they can be put into a van if its not secured to anything, take a look on youtube. .. how long does it take to steal a bike? 12 FOOKIN SECONDS IN THAT VIDEO!!!!!
has anyone considered this?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorbike-Motorcycle-2-way-Pager-Alarm-Immobiliser-Remote-Start-shock-sensor-/400269855319?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5d31f14a57

but cheap you say? well whats your bike worth to you? i had a bike stolen once and if your lucky enough to have the call saying its been found the least you can expect to pay to get it back is 150 quid, i learnt the hard way..... AND i had security i was lazy and didnt use it!! Embarassed i guarantee i use it now!!!

I just checked the almax website and it looks very good. They claim it can't be cropped. They also claim that the oxford boss which too is Thatcham approved CAN be cropped in 22 seconds... hmmmm my boss is supposed to be 10 minute attack tested...

I will say it again. OXFORD CHAINS ARE SHIT!! Trust me I made the mistake of 'securing' a newish bike with one once.

Lots of bikes get stolen.
Lots of bikes have Oxford "security" on them.

You can get less than you pay for, but you're very unlikely to get more.

Also, if you get an Almax chain then put a cheap lock on it, expect to come back to bits of lock lying on the ground, and no bike (or chain).

I deal with all of this by getting bikes that are cheap enough to not miss or insure for theft (then sometimes putting visual deterrents on them), but if I ever go nuts and get something decent, it'll be Almaxed to the max.

here's my Almax (NOT their thickest chain) with my old Oxford sitting inside it.

And here's the padlock.

It's an effort to lift the Almax it's so heavy, the Oxford feels like it's made of plastic by comparison.

I think you just have to accept that if a pro decides they want your bike, in all likelihood they'll be having it. Even with the big almax chains, I doubt they'd stand up to power-tools - and if they can bring a van to pick your bike up, they can bring some kit to get it detached.

I've seen a video of a bloke knelt on a london street happily angle-grinding a lock off a bike, and nobody paying him the slightest mind, they'd be even less likely to be interested if he was knelt on a driveway.

With that in mind, it becomes more of a "deter the scrotes and casuals" game. My approach is Disc lock on the front, chain at rear (preferably around street furniture, failing that through the back wheel and over the seat) plus an alarm and never leaving it in little hidden alleys or out of the way places.

The other benefit to this approach is that it's flexible, if I'm leaving it in Sainsburies car park in broad daylight next to the cctv for 15 minutes, I can just bring the disc lock - if I'm leaving it in aldi's parking after dark for 30 minutes, I can bring the whole kit.

Buy a cheaper bike and park it next to nice ones all the time. My first two bikes had no security other than a sticker along the side that said 'Hyosung' Wink

Buy one of those cheap generic Cyclone V2 alarms and grab a proper heavy duty chain. Almax/Pragmasis or ask your local heavy lifting company if they have any thick chain that you could buy. grab 1.5 metres of it Thumbs Up

I have a fuck-off Masterlock chain and padlock. Dunno if you can get them much around here because I bought mine in Australia when I was there (took up most of my baggage weight allowance flying home with it!). The padlock has funny marks on it, as if someone tried to get through it as some point, but were unsuccessful. +1 for Masterlock.
