Hi,

As a few of you know Im away from the UK for a while.

Im getting out and about a lot doing ssome touristy stuff, travellign around, drinking with locals and groups of westerners etc, but am still left with some 'space' which needs filling.

Ive no English speaking TV channels so am spending a lot of time browsing internets, but spend my non porn online time probably split between the same few sites

BCF
Pistonheads
A couple of BMW forums
BBC / Other news
Porn, if its not blocked.

Unfortunately Im on a work laptop, which means an old browser and a very old version of flash player, which I cant get the latest version (admin access only). No youtube either.

Someone recommended I look at urbex forums like 28 days later, that was pretty cool, but Ive read a lot of the reports on there and am looking for something to pass my time reading!

So, help me overcome this boredom and read something new- what are your favorite sites?

I think a couple of these will entertain you more than some dribble and arguing on forums Smile

Reddit. It is automatically set up to be a liberal atheist hipster news site but you can customise it to any of your interests.

You need to install a portable version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

For time wasting I'd say Stumbleupon. Sign up, tell it your interests, click 'Stumble' and see where it takes you - again and again!

Aside from BCF:

4chan, can talk about anything there with anyone as long as you avoid the random board which is utter shite, also I like the dedication to anonymity because I hate how fucking interlinked the world is becoming

I browse BBC daily and sometimes look at the independent but it's a bit too hippy feminist for me. I like to keep updated

Youtube, I mainly browse motorcycle crashing videos and random funny or interesting videos

That's how I spend my days now...

I'd heard of 4chan. Decided to check it out since you mentioned it.

It is, stereotypically, a website for hermit Internet nerds.

I made that assumption because one of their key subject areas is a whole host of things to do with Japan and Japanese culture, anime, etc.

There isn't another demographic more interested in Japanese culture than Internet nerds. Haha. It's also a highly American pursuit.

Anyway, that's all for my opinion on people who like Japan Mr. Green By total coincidence my girlfriend is south Korean. I feel somehow superior. I'm shagging the real thing, or near enough Laughing Laughing Laughing

Think I'll browse this 4chan site now. Who knows, maybe I'll be part of the next DDOS attack ooooooooooo! Laughing That's a 4chan thing, right? (actually really support some of the stuff these Anonymous lot are behind)

Did you know the new (maybe old now) Call of Duty game used 'Anonymous' as terrorists, so the real life Anonymous totally fucked Activision over, screwed about with their website etc, and published every single personal detail of the Activsion CEO - name, address, phone number, salaray, bank details.... everything! Impressive and scary at the same time Shocked

Hows that done then? I have a couple of spare usb disk drive thingys.

As far as reading books goes, I tend to read a standard size paperback (think andy mcnab or similar) in about 2/3 days.

I brought 4 books with me but wont buy anymore due to the luggage weight restrictions for the return flight (hence tiniterwebs)

9GAG.

It'll take your soul though, it's like reddit but more accessible and meme/pic/video based.

Stumble Upon was pretty great for killing time and learning a thing or two.

When 4chan went shit about 3-4 years ago, people who grew up migrated to Reddit and the kids went to 9gag.

Reddit is my favourite, add sub categories of your interest and it's much better. /r/motorcycles is a must, although it is largely occupied by yanks so get used to seeing pictures of cruiser bikes and people arguing over what gear you should and should not wear 24/7.

The sites I always check without fail when I go on the net:

Facebook
Hotmail
BCF
Pinkbike - Mountainbike forums/pictures/videos
Banditforum - (Suzuki Bandits)

And then I tend to torrent loads of entertainment/viewing. (I have all Family Guy/South Park/Archer/Jackass/Bones and loads of films.
Also check Iplayer, 4OD and the like.

I dont look at 4chan/9gag or meme type stuff much purely cause I cba. Meme's are funnier when used in context with conversation and stuff.

I fucking hate anime and Japanese culture. I don't go to those boards, I generally stick to the politics, international, travel, "r9k" (which is like a more tame random board but has a large culture of misogyny Confused ), and maybe a few others.

Once you get used to it, you will realise that 99% of the people are literally just normal people, not neckbeards living in their mother's basements. Apart from the people from the random board, "/b/".

Most of the time I spend on 4chan is just chatting with people about guns on /k/, pretending to be a racist on /pol/,or reading about people whine about not getting with girls on /adv/.

The best thing is the the whole no-registration anon business. When everyone has no name, you have to take their words at face value.

+1

Like you would expect with massively differing interest groups, each board has its own "culture".None of the one's that interest me have any silly "we are anonymous. We are legion" shit going on.

Holy shit I bet we've had a million conversations with each other already... Shocked

I do wonder how many people on /pol/ are genuinely racist Laughing. I have to admit, I've become less "keen" on multiculturalism (I was never a fan to begin with) since beginning to frequent that board.
Today I took a book called "The philosophy for a multicultural, postcolonial and feminist world" from my uni library just because /pol/ had made me interested in this stuff. After flicking through it I can actually see that quite a few of their gripes are genuine - this book spends most of the time slamming white heterosexual males, ranting about white/male/heterosexual (or all three) "privilege", and lamenting on the impossibility of being able to effectively "reeducate" such people. There's too much for me to go into right now, and I've only spent half an hour skim reading it!

I can't wait for the election results, just to see their reaction. It's a hilarious community.
