Do you need a chain guard ?

Only asking as my chain guard has seen better days (inside has bent inwards so hits the chain every time it goes around) and prefer the look without one anyway looks better in my opinion. I'm aware that there will be oil flung at me and that if it snaps it will hurt.

However saying that do you actually need one on the motorcycle

Could of gone into workshop section but trying not to post as much in there any-more.

I got an advisory on the trumpet for not having a chain guard. But then, the guy who was testing it passed the bike with an illegal tyre as I promised him I had a new tyre on the way, saving me a return trip. (I should add I wasn't lying, the new tyre was fitted the following day, but he genuinely took my word that is was getting done!)

Could you not bend the guard back into place?

If 1 part of the chain is hitting the guard then find the tight spot and sort it out!

Well don't need it for mot only for riding around and doing tests. Cansa there isn't a tight spot on the chain, I've just checked it over.

AFAIK
If you have one and its broken (hitting the chain or loose), you fail
If you don't have one, you pass

Mine snapped off about a year ago and I never replaced it. I've had no problems.

I know the chain should run along the plastic chain runner, and not on the metal chain guard.

Two of my bikes didn't have chain guards on the top run of the chain and still passed MOTs repeatedly. The tester was of the opinion that only bikes with rear pegs needed one.

My DR350 has no guard on the top run or around the front sprocket.
