The weather LOL

Hi, Just registered today and would like to talk about the CG, for common faults etc and what to expect etc. I bought the bike yesterday, It's an 04 plate with 18k miles, pretty good nick too, insurance was only £96 fully comp annually which I thought was really good.

Here's a picture of what I bought. ;-D

Shaun.

I've got 2001 CG for winter, not a lot to them. Cracking bike so far Thumbs Up

The drum brakes seem to be happiest with the pivots greased, so if the rear is a bit stiff do that. Give it an oil change if it needs one. Inspect the air filter and replace if it's a bit tatty. Check/adjust the valve clearances so run runs well.

Can't think of much else Thumbs Up

Thanks for that, adjusted the idle screw as when warm it would cut out, but now it's fine. Think I need to check drum brake as it's either low or a bit stiff

I might give it new rings and piston, stem seals etc, does it need it at 18,200 miles? I also might port it a little, would this be a bad thing?

Another thing, what is the air recycling thing that I see, a pipe coming from the top engine cover then to a box back to the air filter? is this restricting the bike?

Shaun

It'll be good. A friends cg has 68,000 miles on it, all he does is change the oil every 1,000 miles. Still on the original piston and rings. My housemates CG has 34,000 miles on it, and is still on the original piston. It's all about keeping the oil fresh and clean on these.

The pipe is a breather, don't fiddle with it. Laughing

Porting will make little difference. It's only got ~10hp and is an OHV configured 2 valve head motor. Fiddling is fun, just don't expect any meaningful results.

18k, Should be fine..

My old '81 Cg was smoking at 35k so i got a new barrel kit plus stem seals and it was fine.. Dare say it would have been fine left as is, Cg's run forever. If looked after they can go around the clock a few times.

Give it a very thorough service to help make up for all the servicing it's no doubt missed over the years, beyond that don't bother.

Only place a CG tends to suffer, is in the way its treated 'because its indestructible', when just like any vehicle, it does need servicing!

It's got full service history, and last service was July '12, might service it myself next month for peace of mind,

it's probably the best conditioned CG I've seen tbh and got it for a great price so I'll be keeping this even if I upgrade

What's the best engine/gearbox oil for the CG?
