For those of you who dont know, I work on Ebay.

My problem:

Customer buys item - we send the wrong item in error.

I ask customer to return the item using a freepost address.

He returns it using the freepost address but also pays postage at the post office to return the item Rolling Eyes

He says his wife sent the item back and didnt realise it was a freepost address even though she handwrote the label and wrote FREEPOST in big letters on it.

He wants reimbursing of the postage which cost £8.65.

I havnt messaged him back yet because im in 2 minds about refunding him.

What do BCF think? I will leave the decision up to you guys and gals.

Review the customner's purchase history. If his request letter is polite and he is a regular customer, not necessarily for expensive items but at least regular, then probably better for Ebay to accept it was genuine one-off customer mistake and to make the refund. Better that than lose a customer and/ or get bad press. Emphasise to the customer that this is a one-off "good will" refund.

I'd have thought he should be taking it up with the post office. You offered freepost to return it which is fair enough. Perhaps you should knock a couple of quid off the price of the correct item for the inconvenience. But the postage screw up is a seperate issue and nothing to do with you. They charged him postage on a freepost item. He/his wife was stupid enough to pay it.

+1 to this, surely the post office should accept liability for this - they should have noticed the freepost address!

He has never purchased from me before. The thing that has annoyed me more than anything is that the item is only worth £10 and the mong sent it back special delivery hence the high postage cost. Doh!

Probably sent by freepost really and is claiming he sent it special delivery so he can get the item near enough for free Razz

Tell him to bollocks for fucking it up and to raise it with the post office as it was clearly freepost.

The post office are usually like
Is the item under the value of £30?
No
Then you don't need special delivery. Rolling Eyes

You sent a wrong item.

The entire chain of events, including his idiocy, was set in motion entirely by your error. Morally you are bound to give him a full refund.

His fault for returning it special delivery. However you will have saved the amount that Royal Mail charge you for using freepost - give him that.

Sure you made the first mistake.

But you tried to resolve it with as little charge to him via freepost.

He then didn't utilise the freepost and paid.
His fault. aslong as you told him it's freepost.

If they wrote freepost by hand on the envelope then tough, there is no excuse for stupidity like that.

If you gave them a freepost address and then they delivered it by hand the other side of the country and demanded fuel money what would you do then?

They could have sent it second recorded for £3 and it would have been covered so if you must give the idiots anything then make it £3.

You have the nerve to call the customer retarded for not using the freepost service yet you sent out the wrong item. Surely that makes you retarded as well by your own logic?

Has this person actually provided you proof of the postage costs? I.e the reciept with tracking number?

And if so have you recieved the item back and can confirm its the same one (tracking number etc) as in the proof of postage he's providing.

Otherwise it reeks of someone whos sent it freepost and also wants some extra fucking dolla out of you and if you cant confirm the above I would tell him to go fuck himself.

i voted half refund, mostly because...

you sent the wrong item, mistakes happen.
he sent it back by the wrong method

but half refund of the postage shows good faith and that your willing to understand people are just that, people and things do go wrong.

are you sending the correct item for issueing a refund for said item?
