I've never 'got' Dad's Army, I just don't find the humour in it. It's not an 'old sitcom' thing either, because I'm quite partial to Porridge, Open all Hours, Citizen Smith, Till death do us part etc
'Grandad' was a great tune though. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Yeah, but then you're old enough to remember the war though.
When one of my kids was learning about WW2 at school, she came home one afternoon and innocently asked me 'Dad, what did you do during the war?'.
With hindsight, I wish I'd spun some epic yarn about being the first man to land on Sword beach, or how I served hot lead sandwiches to Jerry from behind the controls of a Spitfire, or similar. But, I went for boring old honesty, and explained to her that the war had finished 30 years before I was born, and that even her Grandad had only been 3 in 1945. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Although dad's army was a load of village buffooons ,defending the country and being racist to the germans, there's a hidden side to it.
The characters and their positions show an upheaval in the social sphere and having Clive Dunn going on about the fuzzy wuzzies might seem like Krad after a few tinnies but its there to show the story.
Clive Dunns' career went back before ww1 and in the 19th century.
John le Mesiuer (the puffy one) is acually the most educated and cultured one of the lot but has to bite his lip to Mr mannering, who is basically new money. The vicar is classic .
