Anyone know here i stand on this:
Found a dog 4 weeks ago, registered him with the local Authorities and vets etc and reported him as lost, adverts in local newspapers. Heard nothing back in that time, however today his owner has gotten in touch, turns out he's been missing from 3 miles up the road for over 6 weeks and the chap has clearly made little to no effort to find him.
I want to keep the dog, he's happy, healthy and well looked after, however obviously the chap wants him back. Since he's clearly incapable of not loosing his dog, not looking for him properly and made no visible effort to locate him, where do i stand on telling him to F*** off?

If he wants to take it to court, it'd be a civil matter, and the council etc have said they won't get involved, but if it does get that far, what chance do i even have here?

cheers, Matt

You've got no chance whatsoever, the dog belongs to him, in law it's property and it's his. If you're right and he doesn't care about the dog, then I'm sure he'd sell it to you so try and buy it, if not then you know he does care for the dog and will probably be more careful to stop it running away again.

Not getting emotionally attached to a stray you take in - is up there near the top of the rulebook!

yeh that's what i figured tbh, gonna have a chat with him tomorrow, see what he says.
The woman i spoke to from the council said she'd met him and he was a bit E.S.N so i don't know how i'd broach that subject with him, Guess we'll just have to see what the morning brings.

As you have fed and watered the dog, I see no reason why you could not request any money spent be refunded. maybe hold the dog as collateral!
Send him a message something along the lines of, yes please do pick your dog up, I will have an invoice for money spent amounting to xxx waiting for you. Dont forget to factor in your time, he may then decide he can't be arsed to pay you and leave you the dog.
After all if you had just took it to kennels he would have had to pay to get it back!
Had the same situation a few years back, found dog, advertised in local papers etc, no one claimed him. We spent money at vets getting his dewclaws sorted out, de flead and de loused and got him neutered after 4 weeks as he was aggressive. When owner finally decided 6 weeks later that we had his dog I suggested that he would like to reimburse me the vets fees. He decided the dog wasn't that important to him!

You don't even know the bloke let alone how much he's tried looking. If my dog went missing I couldn't give up work to look for him, or parental duties which would leave a small amount of time to find him. I'd certainly want him back from someone good enough to take him in.

You had the intention of finding his owner, see it through. If you get some compo for looking after it then its a touch (and the right thing) if not then chalk it up as an experience with a rude person.

Give the dog back, a few weeks does not make you the dogs owner.

Why did you do all that if you didn't want to find his owner and were secretly hoping he didn't have one?
Your efforts have now worked, owner found, dog reunited, hurrah........ what's the problem again?

Can the guy prove the dog is his? Is it micro chipped etc?

If he cant then surely you cant just let a random stranger take a dog off you.......

How do you know that?

If you want a dog, adopt/buy one that isn't wanted/owned by someone.

Does he have your address or any way of getting it?

If not, enjoy your new dog.

Your council are a bit lax. Confused

When I found a dog (several years ago now) I reported her and they took her into kennels for 4 weeks.

The dog warden rang me after 2 weeks and said nobody had claimed her and if that was still the case at the end of the 4 weeks I could buy her off them for a nominal sum of £2, otherwise she was for the chop.

I did, and they gave me a paper that was my legal ownership. I paid a bloody fortune at the vet to cure her kennel cough that she picked up while she was with them Evil or Very Mad then 2 weeks after that the original owner turned up on my doorstep wanting her back.

I said they were welcome to her once they'd reimbursed my vets fees and my £2, they said they would think about it, I never heard from them again.

We had 15 happy years with her.... Smile

Mind you she was a scruffy little mongrel of indeterminate origin.

What sort of dog is it?

Its not a dog that people will breed for monetary gain? Like a staffy or something like that? last thing you want to do is hand it back to a dickhead who's going to abuse it for puppy's and then kill it with bricks.

Also I'd of been tempted to tell the owner that after the 4 weeks no one had come forward so you had him put down. Free dog. Thumbs Up

Morals come into play it seems.

Selfish: Lie with whatever story you've read here.

Truthful: Give him the dog.

If you go selfish, you'll be paranoid forever !

Imagine you keep the dog. the dog and you are really happy and have bonded.

A year later the dog gets loose and you look everywhere for it.

Six weeks later you get a phone call saying the dog has been found.

Your over the moon.

You call round to collect old faithful BUT

Your told your a useless owner and why did it take so long to find the dog?? Your not having him back.

How would you react??

Second scenario.

You call round and your told that Old Faithful has been well looked after and has bonded with you. You would love to keep Old faithful, is there any chance??

The previous owner will either say 'no way' I love Old Faithful as well. Or, yeah keep it, I don't want it any more.

Can't hurt and no confrontation. Thumbs Up

You might mean well but he may have put the effort in to find the dog. Let's face it, he did find the dog. There could be broken hearted children involved. You've probably bonded with it (good dogs are ace) but it's not your dog mate. If it's not showing signs of abuse make his day and give it back. The dog will be happy too. Smile

Then get your arse to the pound and get yourself a furry little mate. Smile

Just give him the fucking dog back and stop trying to plot ways to sponge money off the bloke.
No one forced you to look after the dog in the mean time, so you shouldn't expect to be paid for doing it.

Plus point is you know you want a dog now. Contact a local rescue and take one of theirs off their hands before it gets PTS.

No wonder the original owner chucked it out.

All you can do is ask, if he says no its mine then you haven't got a leg to stand on unfortunately. If you don't ask you don't get. Thumbs Up
