Apology if repost but it was new to me.
I know this is in the USA but would be nice if such punishment could be dealt out here for some of the stupid stuff drivers do (although would probably break some EU humiliating a human law).

Quote:
A woman who was caught on video driving along a sidewalk to avoid a stopped school bus has been ordered to wear an "idiot" sign at the intersection where it happened.

Shena Hardin, 32, of Cleveland pleaded guilty to not stopping for a school bus and reckless operation. A Cleveland Municipal Court judge ordered her driver's license suspended for 30 days and ordered her to pay $250 in court costs, according to WJW Fox 8.

As part of the sentence, Hardin must also must wear a sign that reads, "Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid the school bus" for an hour a day for two days next week at the intersection where the incident occurred, according to Fox 8.

Hardin was arrested on Sept. 11 after a veteran school bus driver, Uriah Herron, noticed Hardin pull her driving stunt several times and recorded one incident with his cellphone camera.

"We had a very conscientious driver for 30 years. He really cares about his children and he took the extra step that this doesn't happen again," Cleveland Metropolitan School District bus manager Eric Taylor told newsnet5.com.

The judge's unique sentence predictably has drawn hundreds of comments on social media. Many agree with the sentence, saying more judges should strive for nontraditional penalties. Others, however, argue that the punishment is too degrading and humiliating for a motor vehicle violation.

It's an excellent punishment and it'll probably hit home more than a few points and a fine, or whatever the colonial equivalent is.

I love it. Only problem is that where I live people would just pay her no mind, thinking she is just another "Will work for food" or "Need money for beer" type bums that are always standing on street corners. I think she should have to drive the bus full of screaming, sweaty rodents... er... kids... for a few weeks. NO ONE wants that punishment.

Thinking Hmmm...
Update to that link click here.

Agreed to pay £5k to thief out of court settlement but forced to also pay £40k to solicitors. Wonder where the biggest thief is there. Guy has lost a lot, hardly justice. Sorry, that should be the English justice system at work there.

£40K for writing a few blackmail letters, good work if you can get it.

"Idiot" signs could be prohibited under ECHR Article 3, 4, or 8, take your pick.

I remember reading many years ago of a similar case in the US where the judge ordering someone to wear a humiliating sign was found to be against the Constitution ('cruel and unusual punishment'). Maybe she consented to wearing the sign instead of a more traditional punishment, I doubt she could be forced to.

There's a really interesting line hidden in the middle of that article - "Gilbert – who claimed he was only taking wages he was owed". They've clearly never got the other side of the story which may well have been the 'thief' was not paid and his employer said "like it or sling yer hook". It's a big extrapolation from one line in the article, but the whole story isn't exactly unbiased reporting.

If it were the case then I can understand the "thief's" actions. I'm still owed a considerable sum and the number of times I've thought about just taking it from the guy who owes it to me...

Go for it, just don't get photographed blubbing when he frog-marches you down the cop shop, or else it'll emotionally scar you for life. Rolling Eyes

Mr Gilbert said after his ordeal that he was planning to sue his former boss for 'humiliation and upset' after being disowned by his family.

But he admitted that even he was surprised when his boss was arrested.

He said: 'They frogmarched me to the police station. I was so relieved. They (police) took me round the back and said "You've got a bigger case against them".

'I thought "hang on I'm the criminal here".

'I probably deserved it for what I did, fair enough but I wasn't stealing from him and I paid the money back to Cash Converters.

He added: 'I'm probably going go for compensation for him, I want something back for the pain. It's the hurt and pain it's caused.

'I feel humiliated, exactly what it was designed to do but it has also hurt quite a lot of people.'

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said: 'A 39-year-old man from Colchester has received a police caution in connection with the theft of a sum of money from a company in Witham.

'A caution is an admission of guilt.
No further action will be taken.'

All very good, but at no point did I suggest he wasn't guilty of theft.

Despite someone owing me a large amount of cash, if I took stuff of his to the value it would be theft. There are ways to recover it.

What I did say was that if Gilbert was genuinely owed money then I could understand his actions.

Also, the boss' reaction was totally OTT - it's the UK where due process occurs. Not the Middle East where summary justice is metered out on the street. If the story is taken at absolute face value then I think both parties are hard done by and the lawyers are thieving scrotes.

I got so caught up with the follow up I forgot about the original. I agree - took to the 'paths' loads of times on the bike in India.
