Just come back from having a new rad fitted, and for some reason the coolant in the reservoir is now brown?

It was a light blue before the new rad and now it's brown.

Anyone know why?

Thanks,

mechanic had diarrhoea and didnt think he'd make it to the lav?

as per below, dirty, change it. but also, flush it.

i know its different, but with computer water cooling radiators you need to give them a damn good flushing to get all the crap out of the loop.

im sure that at the cost of some extra time flushing the cooling system in your bike wouldnt do it any harm.

Can mean that your mechanic has used the wrong coolant, some coolants don't mix, congeal and start to cause rusty water, best to catch it early on as i have found generally it sticks to the inside of rubber hoses making the internal of the hose to go crispy and blow out under pressure.

Had a car where someone p/o and the goons of the forum did a load of work on it before I bought it off a member, ignoring the loose spark plugs, the wrong spark plugs and general shoddy work done on it, they didn't use the Nissan coolant, they used off the shelf stuff which congealed with the Jap coolant and destroyed the cooling system in the car.

You know it gets bad when you have to weld metal coolant pipes up because they rusted through.

I would go one of two ways, complete flush, take radiator etc off and really flush the coolant system out and then fill with manufacturer spec coolant.

Second, take radiator off, flush remove as much water as possible and go for waterless coolant, less chance of rust getting hold even more. Thumbs Up

Brand new rad or 'new' used??

If its a used rad then yeah its prob just dirty.

Or....the cheapskate mechanic drained all your shitty coolant out of the old rad and put it in the new.

Possibly a mixture of both, though he did say he had blue coolant, now he has brown before hand, so it could more than likely be a radiator full of rust, unless it is new.

I would be upset if this was me

Yeah read it quickly didnt see that.

Does it smell of coolant? Maybe he just put water in which would make it easier to go brown in the presence of dirt and rust.

Or.....maybe it was somebody else's drained shitty coolant!

Pull both rad hoses off, Shove a hosepipe in, and flush it right through.
Then do the same through the engine, but you may need to do it via the thermostat as some will block the system until the engine is warm, and stop the water coming out the other end.

Either way, just flush it out as has been said, and put fresh in (the correct stuff that is). I run pink/red in my car and bike, as it's for new, ally engines, anti corrosive etc.

Yep, brand new rad.

And he didn't charge me for coolant, so it looks as if he may have just put the crap from the old rad in the new one. Shocked

I'll get it flushed asap,

Alarm bells would be ringing, after fitting a new rad he couldn't be bothered to put in new coolant?

I would find a new garage.

Ive only seen brown coolant that is "worn out" toyata red long life coolant. Ive never seen any brown coolant for sale. Id guess at incompatible coolant or disturbed sludge if the old rad was blocked.

Hopefully your bike is now prepped for our great winter weather Confused

Engine coolants come in different colours to help differentiate between their effective temperature range, working life and properties. As far as I'm aware, brown is not among them.
These products break down after a period of use which is why the manufacturer will have include its replacement within the service schedule.

The cost of flushing any vehicular cooling system and correctly refilling it with fresh coolant (anti-freeze) and water, compared against the possibility of incurring engine damage during winter by the continual use of fluid with an unknown working value is incomparable.
