Are they worth the extra coins for the average road user. If so what are the benifits.?

Cheers, Nick

They last longer than normal plugs, that is the main advantage.

I have had experience of them improving cold starting on old machines and on machines running a bit rich. YMMV.

Depends on the bike really. If you've got a single cylinder bike the cost of the upgrade is less and the benefit is more as the bike is totally dependant upon that one plug.
On a regular IL4 it's alot of money for probably no benefit.

Can be a good investment on bikes where the plugs are time consuming to get at-saves some hassle if you are only changing them half as often.

Not necessarily. I paid around £22 for 4 iridium plugs for my ZX9R. I got them from an ebay seller called ACEPARTS as recommended from the 9R forum.

Not worth £10+ per plug, but I see iridium plugs as an almost fit and forget sort of thing. Spend it once and don't worry about it for a long time.

Obviously it's worthwhile to check plugs for gap, mixture etc but might as well go iridium.

There's nothing as tickly, sare and red as having 4 brand new iridium plugs, nice clean air filter and carbs all nicely balanced. Tight.

In all seriousness though, find out the right plug/s for your bike and shop around online and see what you can get. Might as well go for them just for them lasting longer if nothing else.

They are not really MUCH extra.
Amazon sell them for about a fiver ea.

Make a great difference to our CG125 Chav Interceptor. Smile

A good investment for a VFR750. The plugs are a c**t to do on that. Thumbs Up

I've been running the same iridium plug in the YBR (which I side gapped prior to fitting) for over 13,000 miles.
I checked it during the last service and it looks almost as good as the day it went in.

Most car manufacturers now recommend a fit and replace every 25,000 miles for Iridium plugs fitted in their modern vehicles.

I'm afraid that I would dispute any power gain but as the spark is sharper can see the merit of better starting, I've had them in my Bandit for well over 15k and had no problems with them Thumbs Up

You buy something like an Accord in the US the Iridium plugs are changed at 110k. Our plug change intervals are miniscule in comparison. They change their oil every 2 miles though.

Sort of cool, I've side gapped non iridium plugs for the lulz.

But one of the points (pun intended) of iridium is that they come pre-gapped and the tip doesn't erode away and alter it, so you'll want to get it bang on.

I believe that an iridium plug gave me better starting in my CG-copy engined 125, although I may have imagined it.

I have fitted iridium plugs to my R1 and to my KTM enduro. The result has been a better throttle response and slightly better fuel consumption, but not by too much as to be really worthwhile as both bikes get a regular thrashing when in use.

Like a boss? Too damn righty...

I just find side gapping easier than plug indexing Mr. Green

They do seem to be good at improving things in marginal situations. They made my jetting adjustments easier as they seem to be happier when the mixture was a bit rich.

They also seem happier when voltages are lower, when starting and on older bikes.

I do recall a test article where they dynod a bunch of cars and got a small increase in horsepowerwith an old car ( a few percent) but nothing out of the margin of error for more modern fuel injected cars.

It's such a bitch to do the plugs on the 'Cat that it's worth every penny as it means I don't have to do it as often.
