Depends on what type3 of insurance you go for on the bike, exactly how much you pay for the bike, personally i'd set an estimate on how much i want to spend, so for what you want to do, i'd set an estimate of about £2,000 - £2,500 (including safety gear too). There's a lot of factors that you need to look into whilst buying a bigger bike.

Arrow Ring round your local training instructors to see how much it would cost for lessons and your practical; your theory's about £20

Arrow Say if you spend about £1,500 on the bike

Arrow £500 to £800 on the insurance, although it really depends on the type of insurance your going for. Best bet would be to get in touch with Danny on this one, like I will soon!

Arrow Then whatever safety gear you want/need

Hope this helps!

Mike

Well I have the safety gear already with my 125, so what I'd need is the test i guess, whats a cheapish sporty 400/600 cc bike?

Something sporty will cost you loads on insurance. You can't have both, but i'm sure you can find a happy medium.

For the test... It all depends how competent on a bike you are. There are loads of threads with people explaining what each of them have paid for their test. This varies from £50 just for the test as they were competent on a bike and felt they could pass 1st time without any more training following their cbt. Others take a few days training prior to the test, I'm paying £365 for 3 days training and the test for a rough idea (not the cheapest tho).

Insurance really does depend on your bike.

For general idea of prices of what to pay for your bike, I'd take a look on ebay (at items just finishing) and also in the MCN.

You must now also sit a theory test that includes hazard perception, this costs £20.50 and details can be found on www.das.gov.uk

Good luck on all of these and I hope you find the bike you want Thumbs Up

Well for the test, you've got lessons, theory and the practical, like I said the theory's about £20 and I think the practical is about £40 so depending on how much an instructor would charge you for lesson and how many you would need; say if you needed 2 1 hour lessons at £20 each; your looking at £100 to get your licence.

For cheap 400/600's that's kind of like asking how long a piece of string is Razz there's loads of 400 and 600's about, how exactly do you mean cheap? cheap to buy? cheap to insure? or both?

SV650S is a reasonable sporty cheap to insure bike.

However I would get at least a years experience on a 125 before you go up to a bike like that.

I'll be doing my test, hopefully, in August / September and will also be looking at a 600 Bandit, a 600 Hornet or an SV650. All can be had for £2000 - £3000 for one in decent nick. I'm 23 and expect to pay £400 - £800 in insurance and I'll be upgrading my textiles to leather.

But I reckon I'll keep the GS125 until this time next year so I can have a years NCB, fingers crossed, and I reckon if I survive a year on this beast I can handle anything!

I stumbled across a rather good website a few months ago:

https://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/costs.htm

Quote:
Provisional licence 38.00
CBT 100.00 approx - this should include bike hire
Theory test 20.50
Practical test 48.00 57.00 on saturdays and weekday evenings
Full licence - if provisional licence issued before 1.03.2004 9.00
Full Licence - if provisional licence issued from 1.03.2004 FREE

Plus, of course, the cost of a bike, the clothing, the insurance, the road tax, the MOT, the maintenance and the fuel.

You can buy a used 125 cc bike for about £200 but make sure it has an MOT if it's 3 years old or more, and for £200 it will be.

Hiring a 125cc bike will cost something like £30 pounds a day or £150 a week with a deposit of about £150.

A new crash helmet can cost from £40 to £500. Jacket £80+. Boots £40+. Gloves £10 to £100. You can get them cheaper second hand but we would advise that you buy at least the crash helmet new.

Insurance costs - it depends on your age, the size of the bike and the area where you live.

Fuel costs - on a 125cc bike you can travel about 15 miles for £1.

Road Tax (Vehicle Excise Duty)

Not over 150cc £15 p.a.
Over 150cc up to 400cc £30 p.a.
Over 400cc up to 600cc £45 p.a.
All other motorcycles £60 p.a. - £33 for 6 months

Dunno if that's all any use to you or not though. Oh well...
