Interested in getting one, I know they like their flying space and are very active birds, my question is...Is it possible to keep them in a large cage in the house (I'm talking 5ftX X 3ft X 3ft) and let them fly around your room everyday, I don't want to keep one if this is unhealthy for them but also if there going to mess everywhere I also would decide against it, any help appreciated.

Hi,

I used to keep a couple of rescued ones. They are nice birds to have, but they are quite nervous and quiet.

They are more ideally suited to outdoor aviaries in breeding pairs. I don't think they make very good pets and are short lived; 5 years would be a good age for one. Often referred to as posh Cockatiels.

If you want to keep indoor birds then I would stick with cockatiels or budgies, both are very noisy though. Canaries or zebra finches would be very well suited to your cage, they have a nice song and you could keep a fair number of them in there, as many as 15 perhaps.

Feel free to ask me any questions as I have kept and bred many birds for about 6 years now.

Thumbs Up

I had an Africa Grey for several years. Really became part of the family like say a dog can.

Took a bit of training when he reached puberty but bloody good pet after that.

I have spent time with Kakariki's and they seem very different, quiet, energetic and I'm worried about the messy bit.

That's one of the things putting me off them as I have carpet everywhere.

Yes we had a yellow/red kakariki some years ago - as a "re-home" when a friend moved house and couldn't take it with them.

Relatively quiet compared to its larger cousins, but needed to be handled/socialised regularly

If you kept it indoors how did you deal with its 'mess' when outside the cage

Usually managed to let it fly around the bathroom. We had a wet room at the time which made it easy to clean / hope down afterwards Wink

As long as you are prepared to stick with it and put in the time with the bird you'll be fine. Just keep in mind that even smaller parakeets can be very needy and demanding when kept alone. My Caique was almost on par with trying to keep up with a destructive child whilst even my comparitively 'laid back and quiet' Bourke's is hilariously clingy and petulant at times.

The mess side of things isn't so bad if you are keeping a single bird at least, once properly tamed, small birds tend to gravitate around their owner so most of the mess will be on your desk and shoulders Laughing

Have you considered other small birds such as Parrotlets or Bourke's? Even a hand reared Canary can make a surprisingly sweet little pet.

^^Cute!

Birds are great pets, they might be a pain in the arse sometimes but we have to take the rough with the smooth.

With the poo, they're creatures of habit - you'll get to know their favourite spots to sit/shit so get some paper underneath!

Here's my cockatiel Ted, since we're showing 'em off.

Budgies make good pets. The poop is easy to clean up and not particularly messy, unless you give them too much fresh fruit/veg Laughing

Can be very loving pets if you give them plenty of time and attention. They are best kept in a room where they will get plenty of social contact. We used to keep ours in the living room next to the sofa. He wasn't too noisy. Would usually shut his face if you reminded him who was the boss. Laughing He died some years back Sad I sometimes think about having another bird, but then I remember how gutted I was when he died. I felt bad because I couldn't give him more time and attention, and also because sometimes I'd get a bit annoyed with him (if he bit me, or shouted right in my lug 'ole) and stick him back in his cage Sad .

Just something else to point out; Birds have very delicate lungs. Keep them well away from the kitchen! Cooking with non-stick stuff can release fumes that are non harmful to us, but can really damage a bird. I'd also recommend finding a specialist avian vet. I'm pretty sure the vet we used just managed to kill him faster when he was sick...

I made him a "play frame" out of K'nex. He loved it. Would climb all over it, sit on the top of it like a little king. Also had a little swing underneath. Cool

Flatbadger, he's gorgeous. :3

I've never heard of K'nex, and I gave up looking for Meccano!

Thanks! Thumbs Up

And it bears repeating, get the Teflon out of the house!

Teflon-Mike as well, just in case Wink

Budgies are pretty much the perfect small pet imo, the stigma they bear of being a kiddie/granny pet is totally unjustified as they are amazingly smart and playful with a little encouragement.

+1

My mums uncle had one that was able to talk Smile

Has anyone ever had newborn budgies? Apparently they have the most wonderful smell. Never had the pleasure of sniffing a newborn myself. Laughing
