OK, muffs are the way to go, we all agree. Tucano Urbano seem to be the favoured brand. But what if you were a cheapskate Scotch apologies for the redundancy and wanted to DIY yourself a pair?

You would need:

Arrow 1 x Amazon packing box (other pieces of cardboard may be suitable, I'm guaranteeing nothing).
Arrow 1 x manky old wool flokati rug, which has already been cut up to make a Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III furry vest for Master Borg.
Arrow 1 x piece of cheap vinyl fabric left over from a seat project.
Arrow Waxed linen thread, some.
Arrow Cable ties of securingness x 2.

First, cut your cardboard to the approximate desired shape of your muffs. You'll want from the outside of the grips to covering your brake reservoir and assorted LHS switchgear. Length should be from well clear of the levers to past your wrist.

Then, secure your flokati from the cat. The Glaring Paw of Ownership is confirmation that it's suitably cosy.

https://i45.tinypic.com/2m81p8i.jpg

Give it a thorough brushing, you don't want any tugs in there to catch on your controls or fingers.

Next, cut out 2 pieces of flokati, sized generously larger than your cardboard template.

https://i46.tinypic.com/2h5jzw3.jpg

Turn the fuzzy side inwards, fold in half and stitch down the whole length of one side. This will be the outside edge.

https://i46.tinypic.com/33natci.jpg

Stitch together a few inches at the end of the other side, leaving a big enough gap to slide it over your controls.

https://i47.tinypic.com/2igc7kh.jpg

Now cut out enough vinyl to wrap around your fuzzy muffs, again leaving plenty of overlap.

https://i49.tinypic.com/ogkhvr.jpg

Fold in half, inside out, and stitch down one side. For extra chintz, do a little corner on it.

https://i50.tinypic.com/2120i.jpg

Turn right-way-out and stuff your muff inside it. Put a few stitches through both materials to hold them together. Then on the inside length, fold the loose edges of the vinyl over the inner and stitchy-stitch, again ensuring that there's a hole there that can slip over the bars and controls.

Here you can see I've trimmed some excess vinyl off of the bottom of the cuff edge, leaving a little overlap at the top for (probably imaginary) weather protection.

https://i45.tinypic.com/mhzmhe.jpg

And that's it. You're done.

https://i45.tinypic.com/2nltm68.jpg

Be honest, would you rather wiggle your fingers into some cheap polyester bag, or plunge into this lush, inviting, hairy muff?

https://i46.tinypic.com/23vjfpe.jpg

Attached to a motor bicycle. I have bar ends (and mirrors) so just poked holes in the muffs with my leatherworking awl (we've all got one, right?), put some big washers on the inside and outside and bolted them on. Make sure they're well clear of the levers at the front, and that the throttle is free to rotate.

Add cable ties, shoelaces, duct tape or whatever it takes to keep everything ship-shape and Bristol fashion at the inside edges.

https://i45.tinypic.com/3495lc7.jpg

Then post a photostory before trying them out. What could possibly go wrong, after all? Thumbs Up

I should think there have been quite a few from the Northern Section who have thrust their fingers into yambabe's hairy muff. I being one of them.

Now tried out, needed a bit more cable tying along the inside edges to minimise the gaps, but success succeeded. Thumbs Up

I heard copper wire was invented by two scotsmen fighting over a penny.

Ingenius work there Mr. Borg. Considering I once riveted together a kangaroo skin bikini for my wife, I feel confident in having a go at this.

Well done on bothering to make them..

It was touch and go whether I stitched it, or busted out the double cap rivets and the Hammer and Anvil Shaped Object of Shortcutting. Wink

I was concerned about that too, but it's a beefy enough muff to stand up to some "private road" abuse. It likely helps that they're bolted tight to the bar ends. If not, shoving a rigid member into the muff should provide satisfaction.

I've always used the 2 finger peguin style gloves for winter riding and found them warm enough, but then im not a serious winter commuter, and never will be.

Would wearing thick normal gloves and fitting wrap around enduro bike style hand guards provide a similar amount of warmth, or even could you design a Muff that fits over said hand guards, as it would have no chance of interfering with your controls then?
