Stay or Go?

I'm currently working as a gas engineer for a company earning about 24k basic (my take home is more after overtime / call out. Now to give u an idea the company isn't a bad company to work for but they're not exactly great either, they blatantly don't give a hoot about keeping staff, training, etc etc. needless to say I'm not enjoying my work anymore. What's more I'm pretty sure we will be facing redundancy in the next 6 months.

Now I've had an interview today and been offered a role with a biomass company, it's a different area of work but I'm hoping it could be the challenge I'm looking for. The only thing is the pay is 22k basic and I won't have a company vehicle for private usage, not horrific as I guess I can use my bike to commute to my work partners place, just trying to weigh things up, what would u do?!

Id take the job for sure - have they or you surmised the potential further down the road ..

Gaining new skills aswell -- do it - IMO.

Sounds like a step up, and merely to prove yourself before being rewarded ...

If you think you can do it - go for it - be civil with current place and do notice if you can, get a good reference, and a copy of said reference once new company receive it - make sure you get a copy for future, that good reference is part reward for all your efforts ..

I'm guessing you know the answer already - less for a year for a lot more overall after all.

Well the answer seems pretty obvious. If you can afford it, you clearly want to do it, so do it.

The last time I changed employer, there were a few things that I didn't factor into the equation - the main one being I used to be site based before therefore could claim commuting as business mileage and I now commute 10k miles a year at my own expense. There were a few other things, which, when combined, more than swallowed the increase I had negotiated.

Don't underestimate the impact of fringe benefits - I did. Crying or Very sad

What the hell are you waiting for? Sounds like in 6 months time you'll be unemployed anyway and that's shiter than a small pay cut!

Plus all your colleagues will also be chasing the same jobs too...forego the redundancy (unless you've been there umpteen years) and get out now on YOUR terms, rather than sitting on yer arse waiting for a redundancy payout that probably won't come anyway cos the firm'll be skint!

At the very least, you'll be better placed than your colleagues if your present company does go tits up in a few months time...

If so, it's actually one of the few ecomental technologies that makes sense. As long as the filthy hippies keep protesting against coal and nukular, it should be a pretty stable career.

As long as you can afford to live on the lower salary, it is more important to be happy. My only proviso is this, are their promises going to be kept? Get as much in writing as you can. For anything they don't/won't write down, send an acceptance letter outlining what was said in the interview and asking for clarification of what exactly it is you have to do to achieve the next step up the ladder in 6 months or so.

If you've been there for a few years, might be worth holding out for redundancy.
