Back in September, I bought a friends 1988 CBR 400 RR NC23, he was in a rush to sell, so for £850 I got:

the bike
a set of white wheels
a spare nosecone
spare engine
spare starter motor
spare wiring loom

The deal that he was selling for fell through, so he's gutted at letting a bike and a half go for next to nothing. Had some insurance woes, but managed to get a policy for £700 with my 3 points yesterday, so the bike was booked in for an mot today.

Ducked out of college early, and headed round to the mate's, bodged the fairing lowers back on, and headed off to the mot centre, between his garage and the road I stalled 3 times, flattening the battery, so a bump start later I was on my way Very Happy

Needless to say we got separated, and I got lost, ended up at the mot centre at 1710, for a 1630 appointment. If I was them I wouldn't be passing anyone if they turned up that late, didn't hold out too much hope, in the end it failed.

Between his house and the mot place the seals had gone, meaning it failed for pissing dot 4 all over the discs, and the fluid went below minimum Shocked

It also failed for the steering bearings being 'notchy' so new set of bearings ordered, and a brake setup comprising of 2 nissin twin pots, Hel lines and master cylinders is on its way.

I'll update this thread as time goes on, it is a 24 year old bike, so even though it will be used everyday, I'm going to consider it a 'rolling' restoration.

How it looks at the moment:

The CBR now has some nice new head bearings and brakes, good day fettling that and a mate's ZX7R. He's gonna take it to the mot station for me, so hopefully the next time I see it will be when I pick it up! Very Happy

What is your height? long legged or short legged, bendy?

That bike is beautiful.
mostly because yellow is my favourite colour and.. its a 400 SS roady..

BEAUTY. I'll be following this too, be sure to add any details of stuff you've replaced and had to fix.

I can use your thread as a learning milestone of some sort.

@SpookyJam I'm 6'2 (long legged) and was fairly happy on my NC 23 and the lad I sold it to was 6'4 he seems fairly happy with it still see him riding around.

Nice bike.. I had a CB400SF which i think has the same IL4 engine (some one correct me if i'm wrong) and it was a great stepping stone bike after passing a test. Wouldnt have parted with it but needed the money back then Rolling Eyes

I genuinely don't know how tall I am! I nearly fill a doorframe if that helps? Either way I'm taller than the average Jap it was designed for!

Thanks for all your kind words, I've ridden a CBR600 before and I expected the 400 to be a wetbag version, far from it! I just love everything about it, the retro clocks, the smell, the engine, filtering on it feels the dogs bollocks for some reason as well.

When I rode it to it's first mot I felt like rossi, but then looked down and I was only doing 25!

I'll do a full pics thread of everything I've got and the bike in detail, but yesterday it had a new set of steering bearings, nissin callipers, carbon Lorraine pads and hel lines, as well as a Graeme France side stand (10mm higher) powdercoated in black Very Happy

I'm not sure about the engine, I'll ask my mate who I bought it from, I don't think anyone at the age of 20 knows more about these bikes, even 400gb keeps asking him for help!

I think it's great how so many people have memories of these bikes, from what I've heard 20 years ago they were all over the place, but now they are a rare bread.

Here is the article which got me interested in the first place.

I think most of you may be interested in this retro news report, I love how common they must have been back then, and the awful comb overs!

It's such a shame as well, but there just doesn't seem to be as many around these days? Maybe due to import number falling or there just isn't a market for them? some one on here will know why..

I did look out for a CBR 4 when i got my CB but i just couldn't find a good example at the right price.

I appreciate it !!!

Think of it this way; you're taking great interest in a fragment of motorcycle history. I generally only go for motorcycles from the 70s, 80s and sometimes 90s because of build quality and other things.

You are respecting an almost vintage bike, what else is there to be proud of?

I respect your experience and motivation towards this but don't forget to compare specs and parts from that era to ones you find now, that is if you can be bothered..

Things work great with things that share its era.

All in All? Best of Luck !! i've book marked this thread, so please do keep up with the photographs.

Now fully operational!

The previous owner took it for it's mot today, which it passed Very Happy

Picked it up, and he said I looked like I was gonna cry, was pretty scared but by the time I got on the motorway I was grinning from ear to ear!

Just need to buy some tax tomorrow, and learn the starting trick! Smile
