Hi all,

Looking at a custom build (my first) I currently have a Dell XPS desktop which is about 2-3 years old. Firstly, I am hoping to use the HDD, monitor, disk drive, RAM (will add more), OS, case and PSU.

The few parts I was thinking of replacing are as follows;

Intel i5 3570k https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-404-IN

Asus P8Z77-v LX2 Intel Z77 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-555-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

Graphics wise I am open to suggestions I am looking for sub £100 and have been looking at the below 2. Anyone who has any other suggestions feel free to throw them about?

Geforce GTX 650 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-188-MS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=

or

GT640 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-104-GI&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=

From my relatively basic understanding of computing I think these components will all go together. If someone more knowledgable can inform me otherwise then please do.

Thanks,

Jack

dont use the dell PSU, they are crap and are made with crap components.

the best thing you can do give yourself a good start on and PC build is using a decent PSU.

other than that, its been several years before i played with intel and nvidia, heck its been nearly as long since i last build any machine

If you have to go for one of those graphics cards then GTX650.

Are you sure the RAM from your old PC will fit the new motherboard.

If you do decide to stay with the PSU, does it have the correct power for your new PC.

If your not going to OverClock the CPU, you could save a little money and spend else where.

What you are doing is the chav equivalent of putting alloys on your Saxo, when you should be upgrading to the Focus ST.

What is your price range.

Haha excellent analogy.

Yes I am being chavtastic, mainly because I don't want to spend too much, just come out of £1600 debt so trying to avoid going back in!

I am budgeting £300-400, I do not intend to overclock so I was going to hope the current PSU will be fine, if not no biggie I can spend a little there.

In regards to the RAM I am getting 8 gig anyway so anything else that fits will be a bonus.

£80 for GPU
£170 on the Processor
£24 on the RAM
£68 on Mobo.

= £342

So £60 left on improvements and/or PSU upgrade.

Specs are here for existing looks like 250 psu which is shit I gather. 1 full size PCi express slot and one not full size haha.

Those arent "tech specs"

You need to know what,
Cpu
type of ram
type of hard drive

eg.
Intel® Core™ i3-2130 Processor (3.40GHz, 3MB)
4GB2 DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
1TB Serial ATA (7.200 Rpm) Hard Drive

Cut all the crap and just buy pre-used, Yeah, its only the Fiesta ST but still... better than rims on a Saxo.

Both are ok.

I cant search for better individual parts... bit busy, but I'd buy 1st one cos I'm easy.

What he said ^

You will want from the mobo: SATA lll, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0 and preferably a socket 1155 to keep in check with future upgrades on CPU's.

The i3 is not capable of being over clocked either (I know you said you don't want, just saying).

Worth noting as well, unless you're going to be making a high end rig for gaming or video editing, music production, 3D rendering, etc. A top model i5 will give you the same results as the i7 in every day use. You won't notice any difference until it comes to using those 4 hyper threads on the i7 and using it for any of the above things I listed.

However, that said, if you're on a budget, there's nothing wrong with AMD and going for something less pricey but comparatively powerful.

Also, best advice yet was to not skimp on a PSU. You will regeret it and it will cost you more in the long run. Get a gold certified PSU, something from Corsair, Coolermaster, etc. Usually they come with a 5 year warranty on them, not 5 seconds like the shite ones.
