Proposed changes to category A rules from 31 December 2013
From 31 December 2013 it's proposed that the rules for category A unrestricted motorcycles will change again.
Motorcycles used from then must:
have an engine power of at least 50 kW (67 bhp)
weigh at least 180 kg when it's not carrying any goods or burden

Would not really affect you if you plan on using a school as the change is only an increase in power from 40 to 50kw and the introduction of a minimum weight.

All moot points at the moment though as it looks as though the change is being deferred until 2018

I think the deferment was because a lot of schools just got kitted up with new 600 / 650 bikes for the 2012 change and a lot of them won't meet the weight requirement, e.g. the SV650 I trained on.

Suzuki only appear to quote a wet weight for it, which is heavy enough. It'd be depend on whether it was interpreted as wet or dry. Of course, the 3rd Directive doesn't say. It would be consistent for the UK to interpret it as wet, but Honda at least seem to be assuming that it'll be dry - the new CB500 is bang on the maximum power and minimum dry weight for the new A2 category.

Bear in mind that the official government site is still showing the 34.6kW GS500 as an example of a 35kW+ bike - although they've noticed that it's under 35kW for the new A2 list. DSA examiners demonstrably don't give a stuff though. I'd hazard a guess that most of them can't really be arsed with sinking to Brussel's level of petty pedantry.
