Hi

Started to wear glasses at 19 year old, mainly for reading/driving, and even then i only really wear them for driving the car when its dark/crappy conditions. Not particulary strong lenses and always felt a wuss wearing them.
Im 34 now and have my eyes checked every few years but my perscription has never changed untill recently. Ive never worn them whilst on the bike. Never worn them to work (i work days + nights in a warehouse on a FLT) where my eyes can get super tired towards of a 12 hour shift. I only wear them for fishing when it starts getting dark if i can be bothered to get them from the car. Sometimes wear when watching a film or playing xbox and im tired, again if i can be bothered to get them from the car.

These days when i wear them my sight is improved but they give me headache so i went back to the opticians and yes, i now need slightly stronger ones. Ive had a go at contact lenses and cant get on with them. I accept my eyes will only get worse as i get older. However, i cant get my head around wearing glasses all the time! Id love to wear them to work just once to see what difference it would make over a 12 hour night shift but i know if i do, ill be made to wear them all the time. Sounds stupid i know but its all about change. Just cant imagine carrying them around everywhere.

Dont really know what im asking here Laughing maybe im trying to convince myself to do it. I dunno.

Surely someone must be in the same situation or similar before??

You get used to it, I went from having good vision to slightly short sighted at 19 - you just have to force yourself to wear them for a bit and soon you forget.

I wear the frameless specs these days and find they make a big difference.

You get used to them, Don't start complaining til your eye sight is as bad as mine Razz

my prescription is quite dire.
R
SPH -6.75
Cyl +1.00
Axis 100

L
SPH -9.00
Cyl +1.00
Axis 90

When I was younger, my brother decided it was a good idea to spray de-icer in my eyes... That was probably the cause of my bad eyesight, but its been gradually getting worse and worse over the years, I've not been able to see without my glasses for about 10 years, everything is just a giant blur of colours...

Imagine if you had to put up with that every day of your life, then start complaining Smile

its not that i cant see everything crystal clear, its that im taking the step from next to nothing to everyday.

apparently your eyes get worse over time the more you wear glasses as your eyes become more 'lazy' as they dont have to work as hard (so i read somewhere on the net)

Apparently being the key word.

Your eyes aren't going to get worse by wearing something that stops your eyes from straining.

If your eye sight gradually gets worse when wearing glasses they will be working just as hard any way.

It's like all these other cock and bull stories going around about smoking increases your chance of getting cancer and wearing a hat increases your chance of going bald.... Do you have code 01 on your driving license? If so you must wear 'sight correction' when you drive or ride. If you have a spill and you weren't wearing your specs, you could get shafted by the long phallus of the law.

I wondered what all those 01's meant next to every category on my licence!
I've been wearing since early teens, they're a PITA but it does mean I can see most times ( motorbikes and water sports being the main exceptions - but I have been wearing contacts for several years which helps).
I thought with a -3.5 and -5.0 ( plus astigmatism) that they were pretty grim as I can't see diddly squat without correction but I'd not fancy yours IMark.
Good news for me though as my last test in October revealed that my shortsightedness has undergone an improvement - it's now better than at any time in the last four years Very Happy
And if you think having bad eyesight is grim, wait until Mother Nature throws Iritis your way. You haven't lived 'til you've had injections under the eyelid Sick

I had glasses at like 17 full time.. fucking worst thing that happened to me I couldn't believe it.

Gradually accepted the fact I can't see shit without them, and I faint when I put contact lenses in Laughing

So tough shit for me.

Thumbs Up

Eye sight started worsening around 6th form. By the end of my second year I had some glasses. Year later I started wearing contact lenses.

Recently been skint so contacts have been put off for a bit and no wear glasses when I ride.

Neither had really bothered me. I prefer contacts though, definitely. Riding is so much more pleasant not having my glasses in my lid.

MTFU and get contacts - takes a week or so to get used to them.

Modern technology means they are so comfortable its untrue. I find wearing contacts more conformable than glasses.

Kudos if you persevere wearing glasses with a helmet, but no thanks, that's not for me.

Same here, although I was prescribed a pair when I was 10. I would put them on at home and take them off before I got to the school gates. I managed to go an entire year without anyone at school finding out I needed glasses - and an entire year without being able to see the blackboard!

Tried contacts, they're one of those things that work in theory but I just can't be arsed with.

Yes, this. I don't really understand the 'hassle to carry them everywhere' thing - stick them on when you get up in the morning, leave them there til you go to bed. Its got to be less of a pain than only wearing them sometimes, and them not usually being where you are.

I have a 'bike pair' of cheap bendy ones that I generally leave wherever my helmet is. I suppose I'm fortunate in that I can get away with not wearing them, they're mostly to sort one eye rather than both, and if its wet I'll usually ride without them - rather be a bit fuzzy in one eye than fogged up over both.

Wear them all the rest of the time though, prescription sunnies too. I like glasses, you can peer over them in a condescending fashion or push them back up your nose to make a point. Cool

MTFU and wear your glasses all the time. Or MTFU a bit more and persevere with contact lenses. I had to wear gliggs since being 15 for reading the blackboard, at first I would only wear them in lessons when I had to. Got to 16 got a 'ped and thought I might as well stop being a wuss and wear them all the time.

Think of all the perfect 20/20 HD perving you are missing out on by not wearing your gliggs every waking hour. Crying or Very sad

dont think id fork out so much for the amount of time id wear them. ive gone so long without so £400 each eye seems excessive..... for now.

as for contacts, still took me up to 30 mins to put in and at 4.30 before work wasnt great timing. in the same sorta sense i can jump in the car turn the key and go instead of kitting up for the bike then taking off again once there. Glasses would be the easier option.

will have a walk into town today i think to have a look

I heard you can only have laser eye surgery if you have always had crappy eyes, if you've developed bad eye sight from old age it wont work, or something

What someone told me

My stepdad had laser eye surgery, he was completely blind for a while but now doesn't need glasses at all and has good eyesight, I think it's worth it if your eyes really are fucked

Not true , Lots of oldy people are getting laser-eye-surgery on the NHS for a variety of problems with thier eyes.

I know of two old people who have had laser-eye-surgery on the NHS.

Dont know what thier ailment was though?
And both live in london if that has anything to do with it?

You won't be recommended for Laser surgery if your vision is still deteriorating (as you could do it and end up at square one) if they have stabilised at a point for a period of time then you can.
