Checked my front brake pads today and was surprised to find they needed changing again, Bike is a Kawasaki ER6 and I've done 4,600 miles in the last 8 months since I changed them, granted a lot of that mileage is London commuting so a lot of brake work but I was expecting to get at least 6-7,000 from a set. Anyway I've changed them and the rears as they were looking a bit low as well, what brand of brake pads do folk here prefer, I do prefer greater stopping power over longtivity.

Just putting it out there, use engine braking rather than brakes? Plan ahead more = uses less brakes.

London commuting, you'd be hard pressed not to use your brakes.

I actually think I do use a lot of engine braking, only really use brakes for junctions, roundabouts etc......... Oh and avoiding muppets Shocked I forgot about the black cabs, Addison lee drivers, pedestrians in a trance and manic cyclists I frequently have to pull up sharp for... Is there any study/evidence/web pages on the wear and tear on an engine constant engine braking does? Spoken too a few motorcycle group folk about it, that have had some sort of advanced training, and I always think it must be a strain on engines too use engine braking all the time?

That does seem absurdly low mileage for a set of pads. What pads & discs are you using?

If you can get the front wheel off the ground, see how the front wheel spins if at all.Is the wheel difficult to turn by hand?If the pads are dragging that will cause the pads to wear out quicker than anything. That and the fuel consumption will suffer.

When were the calipers last serviced? How long did the OEM pads last for?Try a better pad make than Gold Fren.

As Fizzer said, it definitely points to something more than just wear, either binding or you ride along with the lever pulled in for some reason Question

I ride a heavier more powerful bike and ride through London I'm very heavy on the brakes. My pads last at least 10k.

Think about trying better pads, I use sintered Brembo or EBC.

Cheers guys, wheel definatley not binding as that was my first thought, it spins easily by hand, calipers not sticking as I tested them as well, Origonal oem pads lasted 9k, could I of had a dodgy set of pads? Anyway have made a record of current mileage so will see how these last as I'm stumped as to what else it could be.
