Do you wear one? I'm considering buying one but I'd imagine I'd end up wearing it less and less until I no longer use it. Or a vest back protector is always an option.

Are they worth it?

I have a proper Knox job for track days. And just have a flexible upgraded hiprotec in my normal gear.
There are lots or arguments for an against back protectors, some say hard ones can cause more damage. As with any gear fit is very important!

^ I would have thought a back protector would be more use on the road rather than the track. If you come off on the track, chances are you'll just slide, and slide some more. If you come off on the road, there's a good chance you'll hit something hard, a car, the kerb, a tree etc.

Which is why you need to do your research. Hit the search.

Jay, like me, doesn't fall off on the road, so a protector for track use does make sense.

You always wear a helmet right? So buy and back protector and treat it with the same importance. Buy it and wear it, will only do good in the event of an accident.

Thumbs Up

This and a certain amount of the comfort / ease of use factor.
For the road I don't want to have something else to put on/take off, I need more freedom of movement to look around me and i want to be comfortable for hours at a time.

Track day i don't look around so much and only wear it for 20mins so comfort is almost secondary to protection. Have you seen the size of the sawblade kerbs on racetracks? you don't just hit one you hit 10 of them if you are unlucky!

I've never had one, like you I would probably only end up wearing it when I was going for a proper ride rather then just riding to somewhere.
I'm already at the limit of gear that I'm prepared to put on/carry around, especially with the extra stuff in winter, anymore and the bike wouldn't really be an option.
I'll probably regret my choice if I happen to have the one crash where a back protector would have helped me, but the chances of that are fairly low so I'm prepared to take my chances.

For me, my back and chest protectors go on with my leathers, be that on the road or track. Then when I don't wear my leathers I have a different back protector I just lob on. Takes two seconds and I don't really think anything of it any more to be honest. Been wearing them for years so it's just habit.

Got CE level 1 back protectors built into both my leather and textile jackets.

Got a CE level 2 that I stuck in the jacket I used for work, which was a hard rubbery-foamy thing when cold, but very quickly warmed up to body temp and then was nice n squidgy and flexible.

Was excellent, accidently leant back against a wall which had a broken nail sticking out of it, didn't even damage the back protector, even with a lot of my body weight pressing against it, so might actually reduce the risk of a penetrating trauma through your back in the event of an accident, and certainly will protect you against any lacerations and slash type injuries.

I always used to wear it, originally in the vest it was part of, then removed it from the vest and just stuck it in the jacket. As my other jackets have one fitted too, I always ride with a back protector now, and will do in future.

Just ordered a Forcefield Pro L2 back protector to stick in my jacket. Had thought about getting one before but never got around to measuring the pocket in my jacket and actually ordering one!

I have the exact same thing in my jacket, comfortable and seems as if it would do the job. (Hopefully I never find out if it does)

If you have a jacket with a pocket for a back protector then I don't see why not, they are cheap and after wearing it for a day you completely forget it's even there.

my jackets have pockets for back protectors and I have a protector in each of them. I think you would be mad to have an empty pocket in your jacket. you may as well have one in there

I have been wearing one of these https://www.highvelocitygear.com/juggernaut.html for the last few years. I am pleased with it thus far, I also have a pair of their gloves that have lasted well with just a few small signs of wear and tear. Thumbs Up

My jacket had a pocket for one so I thought I may as well get one for it.
I just tend to leave it in. It's less noticeable than the elbow and shoulder protectors.

Got the Forcefield ProL2K with straps. It's very comfortable, and moulds to your back after a few minutes. Cost about £100 from Busters. Just make sure you get the right size - I am 6'1" and the medium fits perfectly, the large was very uncomfortable.

I've got 3 back protectors

1) Knox fastback gilet
2) Alpinestars Tech Race - came with my race suit
3) knox contour

The contour is by far the lightest and most mobile with the honeycomb structure.

The alpinestars is basically an articulated polyeurathane armadillo whilst the knox gilet is a solid slab.

They all have different areas of coverage, so it's important to wear your leathers when you're test fitting your back protector. Last thing you want is to buy something off the shelf only to find you can't zip up your jacket or race suit!

I can no longer wear my back protectors since doing weight training. My chest and upper body has broadened, so the 1-2" tolerance i had for my back protector has been taken up! Consequently, I chose to be comfortable and mobile rather than restricted and apparently "protected".

Knox's strap systems are generally very good because you can cross them over at the front to ensure a snugger fit.

Abit of a bump Smile

Looking to get a Forcefield back protector inset (like the one pictured above) for my textile jacket.
How do you measure your jacket pocket for the right size/shape?

Also going to get a RST contour inset for my RST Leather jacket, is there a better alternative or is this a good choice?

Any views on either of these back protectors?

Cheers Thumbs Up

I bought the same forcefield level 2 back protector insert for my leathers, upgrading the previous level 1 back protector. After measuring it all up, it fits in perfectly and you can hardly feel it when riding.

@ Rogue I'd get a level 2 back protector rather than that level 1 one. But if you are going to get the contour, its spot on. Exactly the same feel as the Forcefield that I just bought I.e. you forget you're wearing it. But like I said, I'd spend a bit more and get a level 2.

Cheers 15 Thumbs Up

Would the Forcefield fit inside a RST jacket?
I'll have to size them up and see, but makes sence to get two level 2 protectors. Didn't realise the Contour was only Level 1 Neutral

I'll have a look for you tonight if you want. I still have my RST slice leathers with the RST Contour back protector so I'll see if the Forcefield fits.

As I alluded to earlier, you can get level 2 for £18 - £20 plus delivery. Might not be as good as Big Name level 2, but axiomatically it should be better than any level 1, regardless of price.

If you're not sure about sizing, get the bigger one, and cut it down to fit.
