Not sure where intros are meant to go so am sticking one in here. I'm new to bikes. Was 44 t'other month. Back in the mid '80s I had biker mates, and wanted one too - but was broke, then when I did have some money a car seemed like it was a better idea (enter MkII escort). Also, me dad had a mate who'd died on a bike back in the '50s so he wasn't into 'em. Not that he made a fuss about me wanting one - he was smart like that, in that he probably knew that if he got heavy handed about it I'd buy one to spite him. Who knows.

Anyway, one mate had a RD350 YPVS, another had a TZR 250 and a third had a DT125. I loved 'em all, and went on the back when a spare lid was around. The 350 was incredible. The TZR was great too. I also loved the DT as well. Very Happy

Then, suddenly, it's 2012 and I'm 44. WTF. Dunno where those old school mates are - lost touch years and years ago. Sad

But I remember them, and the bikes they had. And back in September I did a CBT and bought a 125. Should've done it decades ago - then again, I think I'm a bit less impetuous now and loads better at knowing my limitations.

I'm wondering if it's a mid-life crisis. And suspecting it is! But I'm not *that* bothered - primarily cos of the fun I'm having. I'm out first thing in the morning and after tea in the evening - riding town and country and all points in between. And if the weather's too shite, then I'll be in the garage tightening chains and getting busy with the ACF50.

I wish I could get involved with some restos - I'd love to learn more about how to work on bikes. Hopefully I'll cross paths with someone who needs a gofer at some point.

Having fun...What it's all about regardless of age. Can also be practical. I can get through rush hour traffic..just tootling through. Pick up my daughter and sometimes be back passing the same cars in the queues. Bag of stupidly hot chips inside the jacket and park up above town and watch the world go by.

I initially got a motorbike because I needed dirt cheap transport, like you always had mates with bikes when a lad and also like you probably glad I didn't get one at that time....Now some 9yrs later I still don't own a car. Got 2 motorbikes and a scooter tho. Thumbs Up

Quite like the oily side of ownership too. I now have a wooden Mancave to store my hammers in. You'll find some decent headz in the Workshop section, they always prescribe the correct size of hammer to use.

Keep your skin thick and your third eye open and BCF can alter your life if only it's directing you to the best chippy in town.

Never too late to get into it, and it's (slightly) cheaper than a sports cars or a blonde trinket.

Welcome mate.
I rode 125's years ago,and recently returned to the biking life,I passed my test March just gone, just before my 46th b/day.
In all honesty,I now wish i'd not done the family thing, and stuck with biking.
But better late than never.
Have fun mate,I know I am.

Wow exactly the same story for me except I'm 45 and took the CBT in March. The bikes my mates had in the 80s were RD's and MZ's and if I had'nt failed my Mod 2 today I would have been looking for an MZ250 to fix up. Not an RD though as they've gone through the roof pricewise.

So wish I had done this years ago as well. I'm on my bike everyday as well. Lucky for me I use it for work so get to claim milage as well Smile

Nice one. Hopefully I'll be able to get my tests done pretty soon. Most of the (very rural) roads round here are great for a 125, mind you. Can't do much over 45 at the best of times.

But for summer it'd be great to spend more time on better roads, on a bigger bike. Do some weekends away and stuff - a bit of micro-adventuring and the like. Razz

Yeah the RDs and YPVS stuff has gone mental. Pretty gutted actually cos I was hoping one day to have one. Still, there are loads of other ace bikes out there to put on the old eBay watch page.

Anyway, cheers mate.

Welcome.

Yes, you are having a mid-life crisis. But you've used it to get into one of the most life-affirming activities on the planet. Congratumulations.

As far as the forum goes, the only thing we're agreed on is that bikes are a good thing. Everything else is a non-stop argument. Enjoy. Very Happy

I'm not much younger than you and was at your point back in April as regards bikes.

Who cares about mid-life crises, I'm sure we wouldn't have them if we hadn't heard of them. We'd just be buying a bike Smile

Heh heh - yeah I've noticed, from lurking, that there can be bouts of er, discord, from time to time. Can't see me getting drawn into it much - primarily because I'll work on the Abe Lincoln principle that it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Wink
