My bandit is quite jerky at low revs, 0-2k, kinda jerks forward. also the idle "sounds" uneven. Is this a carb problem? The bike has stood for 16 moths and I am only 100 miles into the first tank of ultra unleaded, which was mixed with maybe a few litres of the old petrol that was in the tank.

Performance wise, bike seems fine after warming up, although I can only hit about 20mph in first.

I am going to switch to iridium sparks soon.

Iridium plugs by themselves won't do anything. Get the carbs balanced.

:edit: It might be worth looking at the state of the air filter, too.

Often bikes that have sat around for a while just need a good thrashing to get them back into shape.

Drain the float bowls-sitting that long can let condensation and other crap build up.

Chuck a can of that motul carb clean stuff in your next fill up.

When you say it tops out at 20mph in first, what is it actually doing? Is it restricted? If you find the bike is stuttering almost like it's running out of fuel at the higher rev range with the throttle open it's usually worth checking the fuel filter before wading in with potentially expensive carb work. A rough idle is a pretty good signal that you want the carbs balanced though, that's pretty straightforward at least.

Mine was pretty much same!

Clean and balance the carbs and it should be fine! Smile mine "sounds" lumpy still but this is due to the link pipe having a small hole which exaggerates any slight exhaust sound Laughing idles perfect though!

It could also possibly be one of the carbs are filled with old petrol thats gone gummy so the carb floods and the engine pretty much runs on 3 while at higher revs as one of the cylinders is just getting flooded.

As you are slowing down, does the exhaust make quite a lot of pops?

No, at 20 in first it's hitting 6-7k, and sounds like it shuld be upshifted, accerlatio drops off. This is normal? It's not restricted (at least I hope not!)

If the current plugs are knackered, then yes it will.

Entirely correct. 16 months of inactivity won't achieve that, though.

True. If they were knackered before they would still be knackered?

I had a similar issue with my Tuono that had been sat for awhile. I changed two plugs which made a difference but it still showed similar symptoms to what has been described. I hadn't realised that this twin had 4 plugs. Doh! Once I changed them, it ran much better.

The thing is, I bought a haynes manual and one of the first things it recommends in the troubleshooting section was to check the plugs. It is easily overlooked. Something to consider is all I'm saying Thumbs Up

Does it do the same in second/third as well? The motor should be properly coming on song at 6-7k rpm, not bogging down. If it's smoothly tailing off at that point in all gears you'll likely find it's been restricted, if it's just getting lumpy and jerky then likely either the carb isn't getting fuel fast enough to keep up or theres just too much gunk getting in the way.

This is of course assuming that it's not just an engineered in limiter similar to the bigger GSXRs of the era.
