Missed a SORN by date by 20 days. Usual shit, 'lost the letter/forgot about it' as I'm not using the bike.
Anyway, I did the bastart online and then got a fine of £40 for the heinous crime/privilege of not having it taxed or SORNed for 20 days.

Come the revolution I will be first to knock on DVLAs front door to find the bastart BOT who sent the fine out to me and I'll smash it's effin lights in.

So from now on it's 'Fuck the Police'.

Let's see if they can catch me now. Twisted Evil

You did not get sent a fine. You got an invitation to pay a bribe to Crapita. Write the date your tax runs out on a calendar or something in future, like posting the SORN form first class to the DVLA and get proof of postage from the post office.

In your shoes I might have been tempted to post the Department of Various Lost Articles a second SORN form with an attached letter stating that as a good peon who heard nothing for 4 working weeks, you are dutifully chasing up the Department of Various Lost Articles for your SORN confirmation. Oh and enclosing a second SORN declaration just in case the Department of Various Lost Articles lost the first one.

Have you paid it?

I accidentally went untaxed and unsorned for 28 days and got away with it! When I realised the mistake, I re-taxed it rather than declared a SORN though. I read that they only fine you if you miss paying for a whole month, but it may be different if you're SORNing.

That's odd.
Maybe they've changed as I'm sure last time I put one in the post (middle ish of this year iirc, honest guv) I got another letter saying something like this is your last chance to buy tax / sorn in the middle of the following month.

So I just did it online using that letter's reference code as obviously the mail hadn't delivered or they'd lost it internally.

Are you sure you did not put the form in the post after first making a note of the reference number? Are you really, really sure it wasn't put in the post? Really sure you or some relative didn't just pop it in an envelope and send it off?

Thumbs Up Shifty Wink

They seem a bit hit and miss as to whether they're going to try and rip you off.

I left a bike for a month and a half before SORNing it - didn't hear anything when I finally did, and that was ages ago now.

End of thread.

Save the bluster for the Magistrates. Many of us have received those escalating bribe demands and laughed them off. I just hope that you weren't daft enough to contact them and admit to not SORNing it.

Worse than that....

I stuck my head up from cover to declare SORN online after the reminder-reminder. So I can't cry Royal Mail fooked oop.

The problem with this shit is they may not kick your doors in but you will find it impossibru to tax the vehicle whenever you want to use it on the road. I don't know if the scum would have the polis put an APB on the bike and pull you even if it was on a trailer. That APNR diznae miss much.
They (APNR- Acronym for Arseholes, Pricks, Nobs and Reprobates)) got me in Hamilton a few years ago. Different bike and completely oblivious to my no tax situation as I was 'between' addresses at the time so fucknoz who go the reminder (In before 'They are not obliged to tell you').
When I noticed the tax was due I got rammed for about £60 + The year's duty.
I really should have been given a medal the size of a dustbin lid for not 'losing my top' in the office. It was only the threat of an automatic stay in Maryhill polis station's custody suite or straight to Bar-L that put me off other wise....VVVV

Nnnnnnnaarrrgggg Ya Bastarts.....

I'm thinking did you not check and realise database not updated so you did it online just to make sure and be helpful and stay within the rules sort of thing? Wink

I was out of the country and didn't want the hassle of fighting the fannies when I got home. They pass the 'debt' onto some other faceless unsavoury cnuts who would pester the fook out of me with letters and escalate the bill for ever. I could go around to their offices and pester the fook out of them too but they use PO Boxes etc.

I thought I'd be OK and legal but it seems not. It's paid now but I will ensure I use every available inch of public tarmac as soon as it's taxed again.

To cheer myself up I have a bottle of Champers chilling in the garage beside the bike for when news comes in that they've shut the local DVLA office and the Sheriff of Swansea's men/women are laid off. Mwah ha ha ha haaaa. Very Happy

I know they don't make the rules but as like the guards on Hitler's concentration camps they did nothing to stop the horror.

The existence of any debt is denied, refer the matter back to your client forthwith. Any further contact from yourselves will be considered harassment.

Oh, that's OK, it's not an admission that you didn't SORN by post. I did a couple of those after months of "Pay us or die" threats and that was the last I heard about it.

That's a bit different from getting snapped riding around without tax, but even then, I'm not clear on how you could be refused VED until you'd paid a bribe.

The bribes are an alternative to prosecution, we've always got the option of telling them to get fucked and take us to court. Since that doesn't earn them anything, they don't do it much - and when they do, chaps like sickpup have been giving them a sound kicking for it. Wink

Yup, I've had a few "We do not hold that information and nothing in the FoIA requires us to collect it" responses from the D*As.

It's occurred to me: how would we know if they were simply lying, or couldn't be arsed finding it? There's no apparent route to pursue that further, only to appeal a refusal to provide information that they admit does exist. Thinking

It was made pretty obvious by the Torn-faced Hag behind the gless in Glezga's DVLA that she would NOT issue a new Tax Disc for my ride. Unless I paid the fine. (Which was secreted away ootside their front windae at the time.) But that was for an APNR generated fine.
