Right guys, CBR 600F is in for a service at a honda garage today.

5 minutes ago I got a call from the mechanic and I need:

New rear brake disk and pads (quoted £135)
New tyres as the rear is at 1.6mm and front is 1.8mm (quoted £235)

Bollocks! Basically, are these good prices or could I buy these on eGay and have them fitted by a mechanic way cheaper, or what?

Urgent replies needed as I have to give them a call back, cheers lads.

New brake disk and pads for £135 is a fair price if it needs doing.

Tyres also are a decent price, if they need doing. Bear in mine the minimum legal tread depth is 1mm, so you don't have to get them done.

Do the prices quoted include labour charges?

Fitted yeah. Just gutted that this is probably going to end up about £400 with oil if I pay it. Might skip on the tyres for another few months though if 1mm is the legal (I thought it was 1.4/1.6 or maybe that's on a car)..

I wouldn't.

Depends how quick you want it, you can have it done now if you don't mind spending and how urgent you need the bike.

If it were me, I'd look for a second hand brake disc in good condition £30?, then pads £15?

With tyres, do you know what they are?

I would ring my local tyre place and get a quote, see what's better.

Rear brake disc, depends if YOU or a friend can do it, removing the screws often seize or round.

You can do a rear disc and pad yourself with ease. Goldfren pads are £12.50 and an EBC disc is £60-odd.

As for the tyres, how much are you going to ride it over the next few months? Or until you can next pay for a pair? £235 might be a good deal, depending on what they are. What tyres are the offering for that?

As said really - tyres have a bit of life left, but price seems. ok.

Discs and pads you can do cheaper yourself.

You're right guys, I've skipped on those and will do some research, get myself some cheaper stuff and get my hands dirty.

I'm used to my motorcycles being way cheaper to run / insure, so when I saw the possibility of £400 I was like WHAT.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

1.8 1.6 is near to risky.
I would for my money rather have more rubber on a tyre during shitty wet winter roads.
And... you are more likely to suffer punctures in thinner tyres and wet roads. Smile

I think for a dealer price your getting it very fair.

Tyres for the bike will be at least £80-£110 then you have removal fitting and balance which is worth £45 +£30 for fit and balance (at a cheap place)

I'd forget the rear brake and do the tyres if anything.
You will not use the rear brake as much as you use the tyres. Smile

I 100% agree with this. It depends how much wear there is. Chiswick Honda gave me an analysis of the % that my discs were warped. At the moment, they are 20% warped which is fine and do not need to be changed.

Similarly, 1.6mm at its lowest point is identical to my rear tyre. However, my tread is generally 2mm+ all over the tyre and I am comfortable with this.

So I would say no, I would not change the tyres and query the discs.

Aside, why did you put it into a main dealer if you didn't want to pay main dealer prices?

It could be worse, workmate got quoted nearly £400 for a Suzuki dealer 7500 mile service on his Blandit, and that was just for the service items. Fortunately he saw sense on that one.

Anyway, I'd go with telling them that they can do a bit better on the tyre prices, and DIY the brake. If they give it so much as a hint of "Oh, we shouldn't let it out with those issues" then they get nothing beyond the service price, and never see another penny from you.

Dealers can be schneeki and include things like eye-balling the pads in the hope you elect for them to change them at dealer rates when it doesn't take much know how to diy that. With a bit of Google and Swarfega.
My bike licence should have been revoked for that and my right to drink real ale suspended.

Anyway oil change and checks should not cost more than £130... ish

My S1000RR only cost that for the last service. Oil, Filter, Phaph around the ECM and a wash. Oil and filter would cost me about £30 but the 'Dealer' stamp in the book on a new bike is important to dealers if I choose to sell the beast.

Rear disk? I'd question how you've managed to get through a rear disk... I've had 2 MOT advisories for the same rear pads, that's how much use it gets
