OK, I may be able to offer a sensible explaination....

At work we do an oidation finish for cam-shafts for BMWs, at the moment we're suffering from a bit of a strange-un. We oxidise the shafts (they're 722M24 standard steel) and teh finish is supposed to be balck when they are oiled up (dark blue before oiling). Now we've been having some come off the furnace that are going bright pink when they're oiled....We've had them spark tested and they've come back with an unusually high molybdenum content.... SOmewhere along your chain's history (probably when it was forged) it's had a higher moly content!

Now, don't take this as final, but this is what we think, it's a problem we're working on with BMW......I will let you know the outcome! (wey hey - I've learnt some metallurgy at least!)

come on guys this is easy , summy its chain lube the chain lube i use on mine is also pink.
when you spray it on it is red the alcohole in it evaporats leaving the pink oil behind.

to get rid of it put ya bike on a paddock stand run the engine put it in gear so the back wheel spins and spray the chain with a pressure washer then get a cloth and dry the chain.

you can bye clear chainlube in case your interested Smile

It looks like a light oxidised layer to me, and the pinkness is down to the amount of molli in the actual chain. If you brush it with a wire brush it should come off - failing that if you bake it (up to about 400degC) it should loose the colour - though I think I'd just try the wire brush.

Haha Razz ...It's kinda funny how you're worried that people will make fun of your pink chain...maybe you should remind them of the thing that the chain's attached to...
