Hi guys,
I was pulled by the police late last night on my moped, as I was swerving on the road. This was because I had just pumped my tyres back up, and I was readjusting to the steering.
The copper listened to my story, said "This isn't a ticked, it just means you have to produce your couterpart license, photocard and insurance documents, to proove its your bike really".
OK, I thought. Anywho, I get home and I dig out for my CBT. I glanced at the expiry date and it said 12-04-04!
I've always assumed that a CBT lasted 3 years, as this is what my friends had, and the Thames Valley police website (along with many other english police website FAQs) says
| Quote: | If you have a provisional motorcycle licence, you must satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. You can then ride on the public road with L plates for up to three years. |
He also ticked the "No L plates" box on the producer, although I had a plate on the front. The rear plate got broken earlier today (my hosue is down a very rough private road) and only 2 pieces were left behind the screws. Whilst this was ticked, I don't think this should be too much of a problem, as he only mentioned it quickly, said he "didn't really know about that", and the reason for pulling me up was because of the swerving.
I don't know what to do about the CBT thing though. I called the non-emergency line for thames valley, who said I should call up tomorrow morning, and speak to the duty officer.
Any input anyone? |

So the CBT start date on the certificate is 3 days after the producer? Don't think it's gonna work.
I would print off the website, go to the station and explain that you thought it lasted 3 years. I don't think it will hold much, as the expiry date is printed in black and white on the certificate, but just be honest about it.
You could probably mess about with a soliciter and stuff, but I don't think it's worth it, maybe ask TC what he thinks?
Another point, why do you still have a CBT after 2 years? The idea if a CBT is that it's a stepping stone to get a proper licence, not to use as a licence for 2 years.

I would do my CBT anyway, then print off the pages from their web site etc as evidence. Then show the police that you had read incorrect information and were worried about it being wrong after reading up on it and everywhere else saying 2 years, so you went and done your CBT to be legal as your aware it was a mistake.
They might let you off as they can 1) see you got incorrect information from an "important" web site, and that 2) you've realised your illegal so gone and got your CBT sorted.
Either way, you need a CBT done now so do it anyway, but don't try to fool them into thinking you've always had it, make 100% sure you actually tell them you've gone out and done it otherwise they'll think your trying to fool them to get let off! ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

On the subject of CBT certificates, I beleive if you are on a moped and have a car license you dont need to display L plates (not sure though) , if so does this mean you need to do a CBT every two years to stay leagal? Ive heard lots of different opinions on this and just wanted to see whats correct. I know you need to display L plates for a 125 when riding with the provisional entitlement of a car license and I guess this means you need to keep the CBT certificate up to date to be allowed to ride. I'd just like to see where I stand with this matter until I can be bothered to start sorting bike tests out, my CBT expires later this year and I expect I need to redo it, but Id just like to be sure as the rules and restrictions on todays licenses are not the most straightforward things to understand.
Hopefully you'l be lucky killerspam, i'd just explain the truth and they will probably give you the benefit of the doubt. Ive been pulled over for speeding before, and immediatly blurted out that my speedo had stopped working earlier that week (which they informed me was another endorsable offece), when they saw I had no front L plate (stupid of me not to replace it immediatly after it had come off really) which is another 3 points, I would have faced 9 points on my license, not to mention the fact they could have taken me to caught as I was doing 45 in a 30 zone (they had pulled me over just past the 30mph zone start), I was let off very lightly indeed.
I guess they did me there even though I was slowing down as my brakelight had died and it was apparant that I wasn't slowing down at all because of this. Fortunatly they just gave me the 3 points and fine for speeding. Although I felt hard done by for being pulled as I was entering a 30 zone while slowing down, looking back they could have been very harsh indeed and banned me with, with a court case and £180 fine. They will probalby do you 3 points for the L plate when you explain, but I doubt they will do anymore, some of them are quite decent people you know . Good luck anyway! ____________________ My bike: 1988 Kawasaki KH100 Status: Polluting Devon with two stroke smog and noise pollution!

Meh - I know it can happen and I'm sure it has somewhere.
The point is you cannot ride a moped on category B.

By the way for the record, if you happen to throw the producer in the bin and never show up for court you will receive about £400 in fines and 6 points.
