I have an ER5 that doesn't get used for anything these days, this morning's crappy weather (and resultant hairy journey) got me thinking, I'd like to fit a pair of knobbly(ish) tyres to the ER5 so I've got something better suited to slushy/snowy roads (...plus I won't care if I drop it)
Can anyone recommend a tyre that might be good for this?

You would be a lot better with good road tyres. Knobblies could only possibly help when you get to fresh deep snow.

Avon distanzias will fit. As will MT60 supercorsas (I think). Don't know if they are any good in snow.

In fairness, the latter should be good on pretty much any surface.

knobbly tyres are useless the second you go from soft deep snow to compacted snow or ice.

Aye, nothing other than spikes is any use on compacted snow. I rode my XT350 on snow on both Distanzias and non-road legal motocross tyres and there's bugger all difference as neither digs in whatsoever.

As above - knobblies will give a bit of an advantage in soft snow.

Ideally, I reckon you want a sand tyre rear for normal tyre sizes.

Want to be able to get the pressure as low as possible.

Around 7 psi on my KTM with tubess tyres and rim locks I think.
But you have to be careful without rimlocks when going that low - however less of an issue if snow is the main surface I suspect.

Studs make a massive difference to getting about confidently.
