One for christmas? £150ish? What to look for? Reflector or refractor? Brand rundown? Easy ways to image?

This cool?

Cheers,

Jack

At that budget, you're not far off.

Check out https://stargazerslounge.com/

I'd go for either of these at around the £200 mark - the P is important (parabolic mirror);

For decent imaging of galaxies and nebulas, you probably need to increase your budget by a factor of 10 unfortunately. Get a sturdy motorised mount (HEQ5 or above) and a short focal length refractor (Equinox 80). Plus computer, camera, filters, software and lots of cables.

Here's one of mine. Not been out much recently, too many clouds.

You might be able to adapt a webcam and do some stacking on the planets. Dim stuff really needs as syl says a better mount with at least motorised tracking and a decent camera.

The Skywatcher heritage 130P dob or the 1145P Skyhawk would fit your budget and have the much better parabolic mirror.

At the budget end of the spectrum, Skywatcher and Celestron are good choices. Bresser are less available in the UK but also make decent budget equipment.

Would a Go Pro Hero hd2 work with this? I bet that would give an awesome vid.

How does one go about adapting for such do you literally record down the eyepiece? TOO SIMPLES SHIRLEY?

What is the resale like on these things?

Thanks,

Jack Thumbs Up

You can record through the eyepiece, but generally it's better to put the camera in instead of the eyepiece. For video (planets, moon and sun [with filter]) you use software which take the individual frames, gets rid of the crap ones and then makes a nice image.

Resale is about 60-70%.

https://www.sirpatrickmoore.com/beginners_guide/equipment.php

Patrick Moore says 'don't look at the sun!'

He also makes mention of the digital route, though you can't beat a bit of direct eye-on-planet action.
