Do these exist?

Went down to Brighton on Friday, was on the A23 on the way there and came across a 40mph stretch which was signed as an 'average speed check' zone.

Didn't go mad through it, because traffic was reasonably heavy, and the lanes were pretty tight to be filtering through, but some progress was made. Wasn't at all concerned about the camera situation as we all know those average zones are run by front facing cameras, and motorcycles don't have front plates, simples.

Except when I got to the end of the 40 zone, I happened to see the camera unit, which looked exactly the same as every other one I've ever seen, except IT WAS FACING THE FUCKING WRONG WAY.

Shocked

On the way back, this time in daylight, had a look and they all seemed to be rear facing; not cool.

So what's the deal here? How long have these sneaky bastards been around and how have I never heard about them?

I know I've got 14 days and all that to worry about it, just annoying to potentially get snared by a sodding fixed and marked site, I'm usually so careful, but ho-hum, what will be will be and so on...

Rear-facing SPECS do exist. There are some at Southend Seafront that I pass by all the time. Gone are the days of assuming SPECS are front facing. They've obviously been type approved to work in either direction. All you can do is wait 14 days and see what happens. Good luck. Smile

One of the SPECS roadworks cameras on the M5 a few years ago was turned around. No idea if it worked, but it was pointing the other way.

Never mind, I had a Senior Moment. Jordan has explained how reality works.

<theory>
If all of the other cameras were facing forwards then they would never have been able to read your registration plate. When you reached the final camera which could read your registration plate, it would have no record of you being on that road so it would be impossible to work out your average speed.

Once you've passed that camera that can read your plate though, slow down, because my guess is that if the next camera can, you're foobared.
</theory>

Personally I've never had a ticket for doing 2-3x the limit in average speed check zones.

Rear facing ones have been approved for a few years now. The Cat & Fiddle road has them, and a road near us had rear facing ones too.

You'd have a fair old climb to get lighter fluid on the cameras!
