Left house this morning at 6:00, when it was -5. Wore my winter, three-finger mittens under my Tucano Urbano muffs. About 17 miles later, the tips of my fingers were a little numb, but the coldest part of me was my knees (need to sort that out next with wool base layer). Traffic was light and half my commute is on the A40, so I was moving pretty briskly.
A week ago, coming in with -1 temp, with the exact same gear minus the muffs, and I couldn't operate the clutch properly my hands were so numb.
When I was buying my bike a few weeks ago, I needed to decide between heated grips and crash bars to keep it under budget. I'm glad I went with the crash bars. I still want heated grips at some point -- they will help when it's not quite cold enough for the muffs -- but I think I made the right decision for now. Muffs are highly recommended! ____________________ Current: '14 VFR800X Test passed 31/10/12.

My tucanos are well toasty with some heated grips. I'm still wearing no gloves when riding. The levers are cold but aside from that, I've not felt the cold yet |

I did two winters with Tucanos and summer gloves and only got cold fingers on the motorway, and that was only when the temperature was at or below freezing.
This year I’ve added heated grips and very nice they are too. Luxury rather than necessity in my opinion, but very splendid in combination with the muffs.
Not sure about the no gloves option Paddy. I’m sure you don’t need them from the warmth point of view, but in every minor spill I’ve had the gloves have taken a beating. Natural reaction to stick your mitts out when heading for the ground. Must be handy if you want to pick your nose on the go though. ____________________ 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

Got the heated grips out of mothballs today - it was a bit parky 'round here this morning
Only part of me that got cold was the top half of my face as I couldn't switch the vent on my lid closed without pulling over ____________________ Space Is Deep |

This is working for me at the mo. Cotton gloves, thinnish leather gloves and goretex padded winter overgloves (£10 off eBay). Can be a bit cumbersome when indicating, but it does keep my fingers at an acceptable temperature on my 60 mile roundtrips. Poor mans bike mitts? |
