I will be selling something on eBay ('Buy it now' option) for £300. On eBay, it says "Final value fee = 10% of the final selling price (up to a maximum of £75)". Does that mean I'll only get charged £7.50?

Secondly, I've never sold something so valuable on eBay. What are the chances of getting scammed i.e. chargeback, and what can I do to prevent this? The obvious being check their feedback, but anything else?

Never used buy it now, but I reckon you'll get charged £30. Highly unlikely ebay limit it to £7.50 for buy it now.
Cash on collection is the best way not to be scammed, but other than that I've used paypal without problem. Other people may have better advice.

I read that to mean that the final value fee will have a maximum of £75

I was going to sell something expensive on eBay then realised it would cost me well over a grand in fees.

Did you forget logic when working that out?

10% of the final value = £30. The fee will be £30. If you sold something for £750, the fee would be £75. If you sold something for £1k, the fee would be £75.

Simples.

Also, ebay is a rip off.

Selling something on eBay is like walking up Oxford Street at xmas with your wallet in your back pocket.

I know, I've read all that, but it differs for certain items and it really isn't the clearest to work out. I didn't want to risk paying 12% on my 10k item you see, that's too much money to not be 100% sure about!

Just before you list it you have an option to see the listing fees and fees if you sell

It makes it so clear what the fees are before you list anything,

Plus PayPal fees, it's still too expensive for me to list 10k worth of stuff.

ebay isn't bad for classified ads though, £15 and you get a wide audience.

ebays and paypal fees:

ebay listing fee
ebay final value fee
paypal payment receipt fee

if it an expensive item, try amazon or something else instead because ebay's fees are getting stupid.

the fact that ebay and paypal are both owned by the same company they must be raking it in something silly.
