Electric start just clicking?

Hi guys

So the CG i bought at the weekend has decided it's not going to start. Its an 06 model so there isn't a kickstart which i can try. I have just got my insurance sorted so I was looking forward to riding it tonight..

I have come home and used the electric start to turn the engine over. It turned over around 4 or 5 times and started to idle then cut out. I opened the choke and tried again and it did the same thing, idled for a second then cut out. The third time of trying to turn the engine over the engine didnt turn over at all and now all i'm getting is a clicking sound from the electric start.

From what I've read the starter motor seems to have gone? Is this a common occurrence in CGs and is it an easy fix?

What's the charge on the battery like? Give the battery a good charge before replacing anything.

One click every time you press the starter button or lots of clicking like something is spinning.

If it is one click, the relay is working but your battery is too flat to turn the engine over.

Could be your starter relay. Mine did that and all it was was a dodgy connection

Mine used to do that a lot and cleaning the connections improved it loads.

Well, just nipped out again. I tapped the starter motor with a hammer slighlty and it then turned the engine over three or four times but didnt idle. I tried it again and now there isnt a click when i press the start button and its making a very strange sound, like a mechanical fart..

Okay, i noticed the 3rd or 4th time i turned the ignition on the neutral light would not come on for a few seconds.

Could anyone with knowledge of a cg help me locate the battery and what tools i'll need to get at it? Apparently it's behind the left hand side panel but who the hell do I get to it? I'm a complete novice and live with just my Auntie so I'll have to ask to borrow some tools from somewhere since the only tools we have in the house are an iron and washing machine

*Edit: Okay, I've managed to clip the left panel off but there is a lock at the bottom which as far as I can see if holding it on. My key seems to fit it but it only turns about 1/5 of the way and I really dont want to snap my key since its also the key for the petrol cap. I have no idea what to do..

You could try bump starting it and going for a ride for an hour that should charge it up.

It will only drain like that if you do very short journeys, start stop the engine a lot or a fault with the charging system.

I suggest finding someone who is good with spanners to help you.

Or just bump start it and ride for an hour. Idling will barely charge the battery. Ideally do this with no lights on so it is charging the battery as much as possible.

Sounds to me like the starter motor. I had the same problem on my XR125 with a single loud click coming from the starter solenoid. You can test if it is the starter solenoid by putting a screwdriver or something over the two terminals, if it is the solenoid then the bike will start.
If hitting the starter motor (a firm but not too hard knock with something solid) whilst pressing the starter turns the engine over then it sounds very likely to be the starter motor. If so you will have to get it replaced or take it out and have an auto electirician look at it. It may be the carbon brushes that are sticking which is an easy fix and vastly cheaper than a replacement starter motor!

It sounds like a flat battery, until you charge it, there is no point trying to diagnose any further.

its definitely the battery, headlight is extremely dim. Had a go at jump starting but its freezing and dark outside and i really couldn't be arsed!

Going to get some WD40 and squirt it inside the lock on the side panel to hopefully get the key moving. if that doesnt work then I might have to take it to a garage for someone with a bit of knowledge to sort for me.

The joys of buying my first motorbike, No speedo light, rear break sticking, dead battery and a new back tyre needed. Cant wait for the weekend so I can actually see the sodding thing in daylight.

I had a recent problem with my CG. Everytime I pressed the starter it would just click once. Turns out it was the stator motor was knaff...I bashed it a few times with a hammer and it started!
