How can you tell if an immobiliser is stopping a bike from starting?

Also what are the implications of not having a red key with a Yamaha?

It won't start.

AFAIK

if you don't have the red key, you can't program fresh keys (with new key codes) into the system, but most key cutters can clone the black ones so the bike thinks it's the same key anyway

Do you get all the lovely dash lights?

When you join the 2 wires that connect to the clutch switch and hit the starter, double checking its in neutral does it start?

No, then the immob is doing its job Thumbs Up

All the correct dash lights come on, why would I start the bike the way you have described?

Also, I'm assuming that completely removing the datatool alarm would get rid of the issue if it is the immobiliser which is preventing the bike from starting?

On many bikes you are required to pull the clutch in to start. The switch can degrade, especially if laid up for excessive periods. Just remove the 2 wires from switch, bridge together.

My immobiliser on my old Fazer didn't prevent it from running.

You could still bump start it, none of the clocks etc would work but it would still run.

Don't think it was a very good one. Laughing
