Ahead of the oncoming apocalypse (Dec 21st, in case you'd forgotten), this article has some useful advise from a number of sources:

The AA wrote:

Before heading off, take time to do the basic checks on your car and allow extra time for your journey.

Local radio is a good source of traffic and weather updates and for any warnings of an impending apocalypse. Should the announcer break such solemn news, try to remain focused on the road ahead and keep your hands on the wheel.

London Fire Brigade wrote:

Fit a smoke alarm on each level of your home, then at least you might stand a chance of knowing that the end of the world is nigh ahead of those who don't.

If you survive the apocalypse you'll be alerted to a fire more quickly should one ever break out.

Assistant Director of the Scouts wrote:

If you are a scout, you know how to light a fire, how to cook, how to make a shelter. Those basic skills are really important and you can learn them very quickly.

There are probably going to be no computers or electricity in the post-apocalyptic world so get a basic essential guide, there are loads around in the library such as Scouting For Boys - it was written in 1908 but it will still be relevant after the apocalypse.

Watch this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaLST_6AsT4

15 year old kid who brings a gas mask to school and shows off his spiked baseball bat ("maceball bat") to his mum...middle aged guy who buried a fuel truck to use as a bunker...and a guy who got his mates in the army to create a whole biological attack scenario for his family to "train".

The weird thing is that, if there really is an apocalypse, these psychos will be the most likely to survive.

If our world is turned upside-down by a vengeful Mayan deity, they'd find me surrounded by so much chocolate they'd likely let me off for a bit of Quality Street, or a cheap Terry's Chocolate Orange Thumbs Up

Frankly I seem to already live every day as if it will be my last so I don't see me changing my behaviour particularly. I guess I might take the time to attach a cattle grid to the windshield of my car Thinking

Think I already mentioned somewhere else on this website:

The Mayan calendar didn't account for leap years, and as such their 21st of December has already happened.

And, as a funny side-note - when leap years were first introduced there was chaos and general public anger because the date had to be shifted by several weeks and people thought they'd lost a small chunk of their lives, along with any potential earnings Laughing

The funny thing with many of those preppers (including ones from the UK) is how many don't have guns, relying instead on bow/arrow, knife etc. Guns are really the only game in town when it comes to independent self defence, you've quite a high probability of losing the fight in a situation where everyone has a knife/bat at minimum and is fighting for their life! If you've got a huge stack of food or aren't starving like everyone else then you are going to have a lot of people trying to break in.

Many of these preppers only prepare for specific disasters, and to an extreme, rather than taking a more general approach. Normal citizens are almost as bad, lacking much in the way of food, water, batteries etc to last more than a week. If the power went out in much of the UK for a week, which is quite possible, most people would be completely unprepared.

Sometimes when I ponder these things I wonder if it's worth getting hold of a shotgun on the black market, and an offroad bike. I can get the shells from a mate who has a licence.

Pointless having a legally held gun, because you can be sure that as society starts to go tits up, the authorities will be rounding up the guns PDQ.

Get 2 shotguns. If they go door to door they won't be counting, so they take 1 and you have the other hidden a few days before.

If the Apocalypse™ was to be in the form of a Carrington event then I'd be dubious on how many modern cars or bikes (or anything with modern high density integration nm fab electronics) would survive being fried. Go points I say, classic cars and bikes for the win Very Happy

I spend it lying on a hospital bed hooked up to an array of machines and drips.

Nah, I just mean my daily activities would read like a top ten of ways to negatively impact your longevity Laughing
