recently sorted out a new pc, 3(GGGGGGGGG Middle Finger Razz )hz pentium 4, 1024 MB ram with that spec i should be able to run any game at maximum settings

however, for the first time ever im being held back by my graphics card, a Geforce II MX400

any recommendations for something more up to date, price is a factor, but performance is the most important, and preferably one that will last through Doom III and Half Life 2, cheers Smile

Think he's taking a dig at your 'slow' processor clocking a mere 3Hz instead of Giga hertz Rolling Eyes

maybe go for something along the lines of a GeForce FX as they perform nicely and are still classed as a budget card (they're about £90)
i have the GeForce 4 mx440 and its not half bad but it doesn't support bump mapping so some textures look rather bland.

ATI 9800 pro/xt 128/256mb all depending on your budget. Best performance for your money if you ask me.
Ive got a orginal (not made be anyone else but ati) ATI 9800 pro runs all games sweet couldn't ask for anything else.

Geforce's well mmm i use to be Geforce fan went all the way through 2-4 series, but ATI has got my vote now Thumbs Up.

I think alot of people will agree with this.

P.S the time HL2 comes out god knows what will be out then lol cant wait for the game though.

That's the card I would pick. Thumbs Up

I don't really play any games except old classics. However I'd be tempted with the 9800 pro just for Half-Life 2 since I was such a fan of the first one.

Agree with Klause.

You could also look at a top end geforce fx, the 5900, something like that.

ATI Hardware is nice, but their support (ie drivers) are utterly, utterly atrocious. I'll happily take a very slight FPS hit to be able to rely on the game working out of the box, plus I've found NV to work more reliably under Linux.
Just my tuppence Smile

I found nothing wrong with the drivers. To be honest all drivers for any make soundcards, videocards you name it arn't the best they always co*k it up somehow.

The only problem i had was the fan was abit poo, but i bought a VGA silencer at about £10, it is ultra quiet and you can really feel the heat its venting out the back, rather than into the case.

Going for the top end NV cards costs a bomb and don't out perform (if they do) the 9800's all that much. So in all fairness 9800 is what i'd go for these days. If you have the money go for what you want.

Sorry, but thats ridiculous. Some are fine, some are unreliable, some are abysmal, but the one thing about there being any difference in reliablity at all is the fact that one of the bunch is the 'best'.
I'm no NV fanboi, and as I said ATI supplies very good hardware, but speaking as someone who has been messing with ATI drivers since the abortive release of their 'Rage Fury pro' then I say with absolute conviction that for stability and ease of use then NV wins hands down.
As far as the original question goes, without an idea of budget or actual usage it's a bit hard to give any effective advice Smile

What?

Sorry but that is total rubbish, that was the situation YEARS ago, even when I had my 8500 the driver support was good and still is, even better now. And if you take a FPS hit the drivers and card obviously are not as good, I never had a problem with the game not working out of the box! Go for the 9800 pro. I had a geforce fx 5900U, it was a nice card, however it was fairly noisy and you can pick up a 9800 pro for about £130 now.

what about a 128Mb XFX Geforce FX 5600XT for about £75? It depends how cutting edge you want to be. I have a FX5200 and havent had any problems with it.

How much were you wanting to spend?

Dunno if you read me right. What im saying is drivers as a hole (not ati not nv) are never perfect as they never know what setup you have. Thats the hole point why they get updated every other month.

No i want a socket on the back of the gfx card that allows me to INPUT analog video to the pc and record it, at a resolution at least 640x480 or higher would be best.

This is the GFX card in my machine. (see pic)

Hightec Excalibur ATi Radeon 9800 Pro Ice-Q

Near silent VGA cooler slapped on top of a cracking card which overclocks lovely with the Omega drivers. (ATi or nVidia drivers available)

Omega drivers available from ---> Omegacorner

*Side note - Avoid Watford/Savastore as I bought a GFX card from them ages ago & it arrived broken & it took me about 3 months to get my money back from them. I had to threaten them with trading standards before they took any real notice. (Sorry,my own personal experience)
