Just received a final reminder before the council applies to take it to court.

The council tax letter is in two names, myself and my ex-girlfriend. I believe this makes us both responsible for it.

At the moment I'm unemployed, and literally have no money. I've called them and there's not much for them to say really. Unless it gets paid, it's going to court.

Now, I don't want to end up being the only person getting grief over this, as it's only half my debt. If neither of us pay, will the prison sentence apply to both?

NO!

For fucks sake, don't even try any of this Freeman bollocks or you'll end up in the nick for non-payment, and probably contempt to boot.

Speak to the council, first thing in the morning - if you're unemployed, they're not going to be taking you to court for a share of nothing at all. Provided you're engaged with them, they're not going to be sending the baliffs round unless you start giving them the run around with arrangements you might subsequently make.

Worst comes to worst, you end up in court and will end up with an attachment of earnings order.

Joint and several, yes.

Presumably you've ratted her out. If not, why not? Womyn want to be equal, they can pay our way once in a while.
