The last Star Trek Movie was rubbish. I hated the whole parallel universe idea, and Kirk didn't need to be turned into more of a rebel to be made more edgy.

The original Documentary Series. The fictional ones that followed are a fine fan homage, but they lack the verité of the Historical Documents.

Aw, shucks.

The new ones I can take or leave. Well made, but it's not Star Trek. Simon Pegg can fuck that shoddy parody right off as well, he's great in other things but badly mis-cast there.

Is it Khan in this one then? Is it going to be the same story (Kirk freeing him from cryogenics etc.) just modified and modernised in some way?

They guy you are thinking about is Sybok, Spocks half-brother.

Khan is a genetically engineered super-human.
He, and his gang of super dudes/dudettes, hot footed it from earth when Kirk was being all badass mofo, to hang out in Ceti Alpha V.

Wiki stuff
Quote:
Khan Noonien Singh, commonly shortened to Khan, is a villain in the fictional Star Trek universe. According to the backstory given in the character's first appearance, the Star Trek: The Original Series season 1 episode "Space Seed" (1967), Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived from suspended animation in 2267 by the crew of the Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled on Ceti Alpha V to create a new civilization with his people. The character returns in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed," in which Khan escapes his exile and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk.

No, the guy he's thinking about is Gary Mitchell, from the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

I also enjoyed the new Star Trek film, I said as much to a ex-colleague (via the wondrous medium of facebook) and he said (and I quote): "Be quiet, it was rubbish. It went entirely against Star Trek Canon!"

Sometimes you just know when not to argue.

Although, I'll still look forward to the next film. What I liked most about the new film were all the pleasing little background noises of the Enterprise; strangely soporific.

Thumbs Up

I thought the first movie was as accurate to the Shatner Star Trek as you could possibly get. Kirk was in bed with the green bitch.

No sir, that was a new invention.

There was a still of a dancing Orion in one version of the TOS closing titles, but that was taken from the original (unsuccessful) pilot, "The Cage", in which the Enterprise Captain was Christopher Pike (see the connection?)

That episode was chopped up to create the only TOS two parter, "The Menagerie", then later stitched back together and released, first in a combination of B&W edits and colour post production, then later full colour, after a lost 35mm full print was discovered.

He lost not one, but two fistfights, and neither of them to God. And did you see a shoulder roll? Did you? Don't you sully the name of Kirk.
