Just spotted this (appreciate it's from July), not sure if here or New Bikers is the best place for it...

Quote:
The contract to refresh the hazard perception part of the driving theory test by introducing computer generated image (CGI) technology has been awarded to the London-based SME Jelly. The updated section is expected to be introduced in August 2013.

The DSA met last October with companies that provide CGI services to identify new technologies that could be used to refresh the hazard perception test.

In January the agency started a formal procurement process and two early examples of CGI clips were published on the DSA YouTube channel for comment.

The DSA’s chief executive Rosemary Thew said:

“The hazards presented in the current clips are still relevant but the image quality is not as clear or defined as the quality available today. We are looking forward to presenting clips that are fresh and up-to-date.

“The use of computer-generated images means that we can include situations with vulnerable road users such as children, cyclists, and motorcyclists without risk.”

The CGI Clips don't look too bad really, but they might just make it seem a little too much like a game...

What did they do before, drive around looking for children to almost run over? Or did they just push a kiddie into the road when required? Shocked

Seriously though the CGI stuff is a bit of an improvement.

I hope they take it that step further - show the consequences of not reacting in time and actually have crashes / dead pedestrians.

And yes, before it was travel around until 'sh!t got real'.

Noticed on the CGI they use blank number plates for the other vehicles.

Are the real life video ones altered to obscure plate numbers?

Confused

Plod "Do you know why I stopped you sir?"

Driver "No?"

Plod "I noticed you've been driving around this council estate for an hour, looks suspicious"

Driver "It's ok officer, I'm just looking for children to almost run over and cyclists to swerve around"

Spotted this a while bike, thought nobody would be interested. Embarassed

It's about time, the current clips are awful. They may be "real" but they look like they're filmed underwater. And not clean Pacific atoll water, Blackpool sewage outlet water.

I do hope they take the opportunity to show some near misses with a bike. And none of this "stare straight ahead" crap either. Quick glance, did you see the bike? DID YOU SEE THE BIKE? Mad

Interesting.

No reason why not, the video clips were awful and seemingly ancient
I think they borrowed Warped's camera to record most of them Rolling Eyes

I did a couple of the CGI ones after my theory test had finished. I found the CGI ones a bit rubbish, you can see they're staged and the motorcycle they had in front of me looked like he was riding with stabilisers

Oh yeah, I forgot about the experimental bonus questions
But I thought that was better than the 10mph unrealistic following of a bike/tractor

When I was doing the hazard perception test for my DAS in 2005, I actually recognised some of the areas used... Sketty in Swansea iirc.

Would be interested to see some of the vids, but cannot access YouTube at work Crying or Very sad

Holy feck.

Shit just got real...or shit just got worse Laughing

It's a farce.

Click a mouse cos that is what it's like on the road. Mr. Green

It really bears no resemblance whatsoever to a Mr/Mrs schmuck pulling out at a junction and you really having to avoid getting yourself mullerd under the wheels of a Chelsea Tractor Wink

Guys, really.
You know, as well as I do, this is not real life and they should just ditch this rubbish. Really, just get rid!!

It's just farcical, no way this helps anyone or proves anything/capability. It's still just about clicking the mouse.

Now we're using computers to introduce so called HAZARDS,
It's a total joke Smile

I don't know the answers but pay me what the *Dudley do rights* earn and I'll find em.

Pathetic!!

The problem with those old clips is only partly in the clips themselves; it's in the "click a single button" interface. IIRC, you were supposed to click once when you saw a potential hazard, and click again when you needed to take action for a hazard.

Well, I saw lots of potential hazards; driveways with cars in, people with dogs or children on the pavement, oncoming vehicles coming around bends in the distance. So many hazards that I got told off by the system for clicking too much.

I did my bike theory test a few weeks after my car theory test and scored worse (!) for having had practice. I went from passing with a good margin to just barely scraping by, and that was because I was even more alert to potential hazards - seems like more hazards than they programmed for.

They should probably pause the playback at some points and get you to click on potential hazards you see in rough order of priority. Use different forms of input for seeing a potential hazard vs taking action to avoid a hazard.

On the actual road, you need to take action to avoid potential hazards all the time, not just actual hazards. Seeing a potential hazard means building a plan to change position or speed and executing that plan nice and early so you're not rushed.

I did some practice CGI clips on my last (bike) theory test, and frankly, I found them even worse than the old filmed clips.

Sure the graphics are very good, but that just confirms the long-standing understanding that this is just a video game and nothing more.

Nothing to do with real life. If you click when you actually see the hazard, you score zero. You need to learn when the program expects you to click, in order to pass. Simple as that. The CGI clips don't seem to change that.

Here we are, living in the future, and we can't come up with a system where you could perhaps click on a potential hazard, and score more the earlier that you spot it.

Borgy's right, there's no reason why they couldn't make it so you have to click the hazard itself rather than the screen

It would only need some flash hitboxes, but then they will say it's unfair to the non-technologically adept or something Rolling Eyes

Meh, I quite enjoyed it, the tests are a farce anyway, once you've passed they are meaningless to real life

I like that, cover all the bases.

So they've taken a pointless test, messed around with it a bit, and it's still pointless. Big deal.

Everyone above this post!!
I Laughing Laughing quite a lot at your posts although..

They have time to waste with this CGI Faff?!

All they need to do is grab a decent camcorder maybe the GoPRO
and ride around the streets of London, Birmingham, Manchester etc just before and just after rush hour!

1 ride is sure to contain 8 hazards.
The level of stupidity and so called " dare devil.. my over sized car can fit in that tiny spot in the moving traffic" moment i've come across still baffles me.

If some of what i had seen.. been done by a middle aged man or woman within a small or reasonably small hatchback then okay, i understand that mentality as i would of done stupid things for fun! but that...CGI editing to test people's reactions to the unpredictable? ..

how does that even make sense?
Unpredictable: A Bee Randomly flying into my helmet whilst visor up and trying to breathe.

Predictable: Built up town area .. i expect people to be running across the road.

hehe that was fun..

‘They’ may be able to reasonably argue that the theory test including the hazard perception is of massive value for obtaining a car licence, but for bike rider it makes very little sense really. Theory tests are all good, but the hazard perception clips are complete sh!te IMO. It’s just a useless game really. You can have you wits about you and click on a hazard before the scoring window even begins. The advice is to click at least twice, with a second or 2 apart, the 2nd click could be on a crappy section of the score window.. I can understand the ‘need’ for this for getting a car licence to some degree. I mean, the actual test involves an examiner putting their health in your hands to some degree. If I was an examiner, I’d want to know that the driver knows how to spot hazards to a decent standard, despite being able to stop the car using the pedals...

In the bike tests, the examiners are tailing you, they don’t really depend on your ability to perceive hazards. Your hazard perception gets tested far better by examiners in the real world anyway. You can get full marks in the hazard clips, but fail riding tests for not anticipating a driver pulling out into your path – the clips are kind of meaningless really.

If they wanted to keep the clips, at least get rid of the meaningless clicking system. Would be better to ask a multiple choice question after each of the clips, asking what the most risky hazards where in the clips (with like a choice of 10 answers).. That way people wouldn’t be cheated out of points for not conforming to a redundant clicking game, where the rules aren't even fully disclosed. Those who would benefit from just guessing the hazards, they’d be tested in the actual practical tests anyway.

It'd make more sense if the motorcycle version was different from the car version, since quite a few of the 'hazards' revolve around the size of a gap and the size of a car, for a biker they wouldn't be a hazard.
