Just watching the BBC reporting on the school shooting in the US today.

What the fuck has gone wrong with the concept of journalism today? The BBC used to be renowned for producing balanced, factual and accurate journalism. You could watch it and have faith that in the main, the news had been thoroughly researched and each morsel of information had been verified to a high standard.

The piece I just watched about the school shooting actually reported on the fact that another news network also broadcast a story on the subject. The piece actually included the station ident of the other network.

Really? FUCKING REALLY, BBC? Fucksake.

What a fucking tragedy. The most accurate and trustworthy news outlet today is fucking Al Jazeera.

I stopped watching BBC and jumped over to the Al Jazeera during the Egyptian riots the other year. The BBC reporter was in the square at the time reporting "Several" people protesting. Al Jazeera is reporting with the camera pointing the other way actually at the action. There's thousands kicking off and burning buildings etc.


BBC is a waste of time it's just made up bullshit.

Believe it or not, the BBC can't actually have a correspondent ready and waiting to go in every single state in the USA, and every country in the world, just in-case something kicks off.

Given that they (understandably...) didn't have a correspondent within 500 miles or whatever when it all kicked off they had two choices:
1. Say "people got shot in the US today" and move on.
2. Broadcast footage and news from broadcasts on US networks, who were at the scene.

Fully agree and understand that. My objection is that they played the station ident and made the fact the other station reported on the shooting to be a pertinent part of the story. It isn't.

It's one thing to get footage from another station which is then attributed with "Footage from ABC-News" in the top right, it is an entirely different thing to elevate the fact of the reporting to be a point of interest in the story itself.

That's shit journalism.

All to often, we end up watching one 'journalist' interviewing another 'journalist' about some news story, as if the journalists opinion is relevant. It fucking isn't.

Just tell us the fucking story, I couldn't give the tiniest iota of fuck for the opinion of a person I don't know on an issue I'm interested in. Give me the story, I'll form my own opinion thanks. It might be right, it might be wrong, but if the journalist just tells the fucking story based on facts and without bias, my opinion will be honestly obtained.

Also, when reporting on a story, why the fuck do I want to hear a fucking sound bite from some fuckwit who happened to be walking past the film crew? Shits me off, just tell the fucking story.

I don't rely so much on Journalists for 'fact' as we have been bombarded by 'tabloid' tosh for so long.
I read selected papers and don't touch Star, Sun, Record, Daily Male.

I think the BBC still have some great people in and around 'the system' but they are buried under the popular lore the masses crave.

You have to be fucking kidding? AJ is owned and paid for by that wonderful freedom loving democracy in Qatar. You get their spin on events and their lies and BS. AJ is just pro Gulf state propaganda.

AJ notoriously used footage of the capture of a fake Green Square as a psy op during the NATO/Gulf States war against Libya.

Qatar sent troops and armoured vehicles to aid the overthrow of Qaddafi as well as funding the Al Quaeda opposition which are now doing sterling work killing civilians in Syria, again armed and funded by Qatar and the Saudis.

They are all shit and "journalists" are paid lapdogs to write and print what their owners and controllers want. If you don't then you'll be out of a job. There are few independents, but even they have to learn what they can get away with saying to have any voice.

What does that say about our so called democracy?

There is NO journalism from middle east countries.
Those countries are indoctrinated by Islam therefore freedom of the press is only an illusion some of their journalist try to create.

They provide what they want and not impartial news of what actually happens.

I think because humans document events it's open to some opinion.
People don't always say what they see and like to play down or jazz up stories.

The secret to understanding media is to read a lot and then take an average and try make an intelligent interpretation of it.
But even that can be coloured by our personal opinion.

I understand that, I really do. My family in Australia is full of journalists at every level, from columnists to the editor in chief of the Sydney Morning Herald. At one point, The Canberra Times had so many members of my family working in various posts in the paper, the press club joked about it being the family newsletter.

All old school journalists, it wasn't a fact till it had been independently verified by three impeccable and independent sources. I've studied journalism at university. I understand how it works, which is probably why this sort of thing hits me so hard.

It's wrong on every level, true journalism is dead and it makes me sad. I've seen journalism elevated to an artwork.

Not recently though. Not recently.
