Hi,
I have a performance cam kit for sale, and a bloke has messaged me a couple of times on gumtree about it, and just rung me.
The number started +353 and he was irish. His mate is local and going to collect it. I specified cash on collection only.
Am i being paranoid in thinking this sounds like a scam? Ive text him my address for matey to collect from, wondering if that was right?

^^^
If slightly suspicious then you ought to meet at a well populated area, not your house. If the guy is a gypo and ultimately isnt happy with the cam kit then he knows where you live... I suppose at least he's paying in cash*

Is the number +353 8...? Mobile phones in Ireland start with 08, and the 0 is dropped in international dialing.
When I moved to the UK, I used my Irish number for the first two years before I got a UK number, simply because everyone I knew had the old number. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

I sold my F650 to a guy from Lithuania, it had scam written all over it. He was sending a man with a van round to pick the bike up who'd have cash in hand for me. The sale was through ebay.
Several tortured phone calls later and the van arrived. Cash changed hands, V5 signed etc, all good. (The van driver's business was people-relocations between the UK and Estern Europe, he had a couple and all their belonging in the van too, they were going home.)
The lesson is; not all oversea (sort-of) sales are scams, just some of them.
Probably not helpful but there it is. I'd check the cash up front, have a pen or light to check the notes and obviously count it. You've already sent them your address so its almost a done deal.
Its fashionable to say you're going to be ripped off but, I wasn't, it worked out well in the end. Not everyone is a scammer, just some folk.
I'd avoid gumtree though, it seems to have more than your average number of scamsters using it as a platform. ____________________ Didn't catch anything. |

Seems i was being paranoid
Matey turned up. We had a quick chat about my car (Its got a tide line of mud up the side) He took one look at the cam-kit, handed over the full asking price, job done.
It turns out he is driving to Ireland for xmas, so he'll drop it off for the bloke on the way.
