Never bought tyres before, and I got absolutely no idea what I am looking at / for. Smile Bike is a Trackstar 125cc, assuming anything will be better than stock tyres? My tire size is :

Front tyre size 90/90 - 18”
Rear tyre size 120/80 -16”

Average speed is 20mph - 45mph. I do 6 miles of some nasty slippery little roads a day, and I filter along main roads for about 40 mile a day. Bikes main mode of transport at the moment, so commuting in all conditions.

Any recommendations of what brand / type of tyre would suit?

I think michellin sporty pilots where recommended to me when I asked about tires for my 125.

just be aware, that wearing in new tires around this time of year is probably not the most fun thing to be doing.

Thankyou ^^

Would you rather do 300 mile scrubbing in new tyres (week for me taking it easy), or 4 months of bad weather winter/spring on basic tyres when ya confidence has gone wobbly ^^

Largely depends.

If your confidence isn't as high as it could be then scrubbing in new tires might actually make it worse. They will be slippery and lacking grip on the road.

You might find some decent second hand tires that have tread left on them and are already scrubbed in though. I know many people around here have no quarms about using second hand tires and some even prefer them over new due to lower cost and pre-scrubbed factor.

How bad are your current tires? I guess thats the real question. Also whats knocked your confidence?

300 miles is overkill for scrub-in. More than anything, it's about progressively increasing lean so that you're never relying on more than a sliver of virgin rubber at a time.

The primary risks with new tyres are release agent residue - stuff left behind from molding the tyre that stopped it sticking to the mold - and any contamination from storage, transport etc. before it hits your bike. This stuff should wear off very quickly when the tyre is in contact with the road. So the centre of the tyre should be in good shape in fairly short order, and as you ride, it'll get better and better towards the edge.

If you ride like it's wet when it's dry, and like it's potentially icy when it's wet, then you won't be using much grip and ought to be OK in no more than 100 miles.

If you read up here, another risk factor is the tyre getting fully seated on the rim, and is the reason why running in is as high as 100 miles at all. But judging by the size of your tyres, you are not going to be putting them under as much stress as a superbike, so IMHO you have less to worry about.

Make sure you're riding appropriately in the wet and on slippery surfaces is all I can add. In the wet, I only accelerate hard when I'm vertical; I've had too many wet slides (and one high-side) when applying too much throttle while leaned over, even just a little. I tend to corner in the wet with little more than neutral throttle - enough to take up slack in the drive train and overcome any rolling resistance and maintain speed, but not enough to stress the tyres out much. Overtaking in the wet, I pull out into the oncoming lane and get a good view before I accelerate, and I accelerate straight up, not while swerving.

I'm guessing that the stock tyres on your bike are Chinese. They're probably made of plastic Smile - I wouldn't like to stay with them, personally.

People REALLY over-exaggerate when running in new tyres. I always stick to the standard 50-100 miles before really taking it to the edge, but its not like riding on ice before that!!

Its not like your odometer ticks over 100 and then you're safe...

Just don't do massive lean angles, and don't go pulling wheelies for the 1st hundred miles. For the kind of riding it sounds like you do, you'll be perfectly fine within 10-20 miles.

Things to be mindful of;

Don't do any excessively fast starts (you're on a 125, this WON'T be a problem).

Don't try to get knee down (again, obviously not going to affect you).

There will be slightly less grip when doing heavy braking. But in this weather, any tyre is gonna slip. The basic tyres that come on bikes are always cheap, and hard compound. This means not much give and so little grip. New tyres will definately be better.

Just get the new tyres and take it easy.
