As a few of you know, I'm looking for a small 250cc touring bike to replace my CBF 125 as my small bike (already got a 650 BMW for motorways/long commute etc)

I've seen a few YBR 250's on bike trader that look brilliant. A few questions though...

1. Fuel economy. I get 120mpg easy on my CBF 125, what sort of hit will I take with the YBR 250, 2009-2011 models? They are still fuel injected etc.. So it can't be that bad surely?

2. I assume reliability is great on these being a Yamaha, any known problems?

3. Performance wise, how much of a jump from a 125? Obviously it'll be dwarfed by my 650 but I'd love to be able to cruise at 75-80.

I've seen these two, both around 5-7k miles, a 2009 and 2010 model. Both 2500, any opinions?

Black is the 2010, silver the 2009.

One more thing... How much do you think I could get for trade in on one of these for a 2012 CBF 125, first registration less than 5 months ago, 6k on the clock. No issues, no crashes or drops. Starts perfectly etc...

Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate all the help I've got from these forums. [/img]

I'm must be going mad Neutral
When I was first getting into biking I loved the looks of the YBR250, But I'm sure it had more fairing / features than those pictures Rolling Eyes
Never mind

Should be able to do 70-80 no trouble, my YBR125 could "Just" about make it it 65mph and this is twice the power.
The reviews were fairly positive as well Thumbs Up

Yeah my CBF 125 can hit 65 GPS speedo confirmed on flat if theres no headwind easy enough, and can hit 70 with a tailwind. It drops to just below 60 with a bit of a hill or headwind though.

Bit concerned by how rare it is in the UK to be honest....

I didn't even know they did a 250 YBR! It looks pretty decent, I'd imagine you'd get a pretty decent mpg as well as your desired cruising speed.

I get between 70 and 85mpg on my SH300, for town and open road use respectively. The SH300 has a 27hp 280cc engine but CVT scooter gearing, so slightly less efficient, and about 30kg heavier. So I'd bet on getting between 75 and 95mpg on the 250, and if you used the gearing properly, rode like a saint etc., you might even get 100mpg.

Performance, if you rev the nuts off it, it should be quite fast up to about 35mph, and more like a medium / small hatchback car thereafter. You'll certainly leave all the 125s behind with ease. With 21hp you'll struggle to get 90mph IMO. It ought to be able to sit at 70 on all but very steep hills combined with headwinds though. Cruising at 75-80 should be possible, but it will be revving quite high and near peak power, there won't be much in reserve.

I had a CBF250 for about 6 months.

It's top speed was an indicated 87mph, cruised at 70 quite happily.

It regularly returned over 75mpg.

Realiability was good - nothing went wrong. The minimal performance didn't even require a tyre change in the time I had it. I can't comment on the Yamaha, but doubt it would be that much different (no common problems as far as I've heard).

Despite that, I wouldn't buy another. They are pretty expensive for what they are and don't give enough frugality over something such as a Divvy 600 or CB5, which are cheaper to buy but still return over 50mpg.

Bowers Yamaha in Bury-St-Edmunds have had YBR 250`s for ages.
Possibly since they first came out?

I looked at one when I was in the shop and they seem to be up to Yamaha`s usual standards.
I dont think you would have a problem getting 70-80 out of one, in fact I`m sure you could.

As you know this is my 250 tourer

It will do 70-80 all day long and still have a little bit more if I need it to get out of trouble.

You get a rack for the YBR which is a plus Thumbs Up , I cant get a rack for mine but then I dont want one as my pannier bags & tank bag are sufficient for me

Pepperami,

Gave Bowers Yamaha a call this morning and had a good chat with a guy there. They stopped bringing it into the UK from 2011 onwards, hence why the only ones on the second hand market are 2009/2010 models. He seemed as disappointed as me that they weren't being brought in anymore, cracking little bikes apparently.

My main concern was spares etc, he says there shouldn't be any trouble with that for at least 10 years. Unfortunately they have no more there, so I think I'll have to go for one of the two I posted up here.

2009 with top box vs 2010 without, same price....

KTM Duke 390 is a good looking bike?

And I see there's a Benelli UNO C250 out there

Nice to see an improving range of mid sized bikes rather than just 125's and then 600's
