Hello chaps,

A mate of mine was knocked his bicycle by a car yesterday. He's OK, knocked about a bit obviously but no serious injury.

His bike is totalled as is his clothing, helmet etc.

Obviusly he needs to claim for his losess from the other party - what's the best way to go about this?

Appoint a solicitor and let them go for it? Any recommendations on a firm to use?

Thanks.

as long as he got the details of the car drivers insurance company he can deal directly with them and save himself the hassle only worth going the solicitor route if they start being awkward.

Go onto the CTC website (Cycle Touring Club), find a solicitor via them. Car insurance company will fob him off and mess him about endlessly. They'll also pay him out fuck all, claiming the bike was worthless etc etc.
Lots more advice on CTC forum or Bike Radar forum. Do not assume that the insurance company will just roll over and pay you anything like you expect them to.

Andy may be right, but in my experience they're complete bastards.

"Was it the car driver's fault?" is a more pertinent question.

Yes, the car driver was at fault, police attended and statements were taken.

The reason I suggested solicitors is for the reason of the insurance company fobbing him off and generally being a bunch of wankers. Proper representation my spur them into a timely and proper settlement.

Not really much help for this case, but it is why I take out British Cycling membership as you get full legal representation from cycling specific solicitors and your own third party insurance.
