I know, wrong forum, Embarassed but I think some of you go in Landies and that too.

Going laning this afternoon, possibly too late for advice, in a mates bog stock Disco 200 TDI.

I am green laning all the time on my TTR 250, I am going to take him down some gentle lanes and explain the etiquette to him. Any advice for us both? I'm assuming that lanes I find gentle on my bike are going to be more challenging in a 4X4.

He's been driving it round for a fortnight, so a noob to how it handles as well, but we're teenagers, so we'll just attack it mostly.

Our lanes are mostly rutty, three ruts, two for 4x4's and one in the middle for bikes. How should he deal with them? Same with big puddles? just attack them at 10 MPH and maintain it? I don't really know. Anything to bring? Any websites where we can have a quick read for advice before heading off?

If it sounds ill prepared, it is because it is. We decided to go about 15 minutes ago. Smile

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

With the pressure dropped out the tyres I bet it will go up most things the bike will, just need the bottle to do it.

Three of us went in the end. Ant, his cousin, Ben, and me. We stuck £20 of diesel in the fuel tank, set tyres to twenty PSI and off we went.

Right, we just attacked it. Much more nerve-wracking than on a bike. Just sitting there in the passenger seat being thrown around. I'm sure we nearly rolled it. We were coming down one lane where the rain has gathered and eroded the right side away in one spot, leaving a mound on the left.

I never noticed that mound on my bike before.

We hit the mound and the whole world went diagonal. Much panicking ensued and clean boxers required all round. Thumbs Up

The route usually take 1 and a halfish hours on a bike. 4 HOURS WE WERE WONDERING AROUND IN THE COUNTRYSIDE! I think you get more entertainment per mile. Maybe it's just being a beginner and making mistakes that makes it more interesting.

I thought Ant, the driver, was going to baby into it. No. Just stuck her in second, 4WD and off we go. Climbed a hill on tickover, so much torque Twisted Evil Stuck a nice ding in the wing off a cut down branch.

Ruts are decided you just let the wheels guide themselves, you just use the wheel to stop it getting to haywire. Puddles, just maintain a steady speed and the same with glutinous mud, a lot of it seems transferrable.

PICS!

Stopped mid-second lane.

The two divs, pleased with the exploration they have achieved.

View from the bridge, abandoned railway line. Not legal, but some people are getting on there. Past the great big trench the council dug somehow.

Near the end of the second lane, we pulled over to let the horses in front get ahead and off the end of the lane, we were that close.

So we stopped for cake and pictures.

And of course, shakey on-board camera footage of us being dozy in a Landy.

Thanks, I think I may stick to the bikes, but a 4x4 is still a hell of a lot of fun, especially with mates.

I've only owned one car in my life, a Series 2 landrover that I got for my 18th birthday and was twice my age then. Never owned another car since, after it got smashed up

Yeah, this is his first car. It's pretty cool. It's a shame my dad won't let me borrow his 1958 Land rover. Crying or Very sad

It's fairly clean because we didn't really get stuck or wheel-spin anywhere, also wasn't too wet as the pictures show. Just taking it steady. Not bad though considering he's had the thing for less than two weeks.

Maybe he'll flog his TZR and Mito and get a nice DT now so we can play on the bikes.

Ha. I was on ridgeway lane (the first one with the bridge) yesterday morning. Are the other ones nearby?

Yeah all within sort of 10 miles. Get an OS map of Edgehill and Fenny Compton. Loads of them, more than you'd think.

I have a couple of OS maps. I want to get one for over Stratfor Upon Avon way. I have heard there's a couple of decent lanes out that way.

Here's a pic of my moped on Ridgeway Lane a couple of years ago.

And my current bike, also possibly on that lane last year.

Do you ride or drive offroad, Tristan?

I'm actually surprised we got no hassle from police, 3 teens in a muddy Discovery. I guess they didn't want the hassle.
